The figure of speech is a form of expression used to convey meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener.


SYNECDOCHE is an association of some important part with the whole it represents; occurs when a part is represented by the whole or conversely, the whole is represented by the part.

· The face who launched a thousand ships.

· New wheels – refers to a new car. He has just got a new wheel.

· Ask for her hand – refers to asking a woman to marry.

· Suits – can refer to a business people.


SIMILE a comparison between two objects using a specific word of comparison such as "like", "as", and "than".

· Jamie runs as fast as the wind.

· She is like a flower.

· Pen is mightier than sword.

· As slippery as an eel.

· Like peas in a pod.

· As blind as a bat.

· Eats like a pig.

· My love is like a rosary, full of mysteries.

· He was helpless as a child.

PERSONIFICATION endows animals, ideas, or inanimate objects with human traits or abilities. Gives human qualities to non-living things or ideas. When something that is not human is given human-like qualities.

· The flowers nodded.

· A snowflake danced.

· The thunder grumbled.

· The fog crept in.

· The wind howled.

· A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed against the earth's sweet flowing breasts.

METAPHOR is a direct comparison between two objects with the intent of giving clearer meaning to one of them.

· You are the sunshine of my life.

· She is a lovely rose.

· Nobody invites Edward to parties because he is a wet blanket.

· Heart of stone.

· Time is money.

· The world is a stage.

· Phantom of delight.

· The sun was a ball of fire over the mountain.
