"You wish you never ever met her at all"

Peter Pettigrew was good at a lot of things. He had a knack for everything that involved skilled hands and a good eye, so it was only natural that he was great at knitting. Unlike what most people said, Peter was also the mind behind a lot of the Marauders' pranks with Remus by his side. He was a lighthearted boy, with the unique talent to make everyone trust him.

Sirius had trusted him first with his family's abuse, before talking to James and Remus about it back in third year. James had trusted him with his plans of starting a family right after Hogwarts ended when they were in their sixth year, knowing that unlike Remus and Sirius, Peter wouldn't be as confused by his dreams. Remus had trusted him with his sexuality and his crushes on Owen Laims, Sirius Black and Callisto Claire, because Peter wouldn't make a big fuss about it. It had always been like this, but people never knew. To them, Peter Pettigrew was the spare; a guy that just trailed after them. In reality, Peter Pettigrew was and would be so much more than that.

Unfortunately, there were things Peter Pettigrew wasn't as good at. He thought Potions and Astronomy were stupid, his incapability to understand the basics making him scowl at their mere thought. He wasn't all that good at writing letters, his replies to James' ten feet long summer letters being brief sentences that had been written and rewritten thousands of times. But most importantly, Peter Pettigrew sucked at present shopping and with Sirius' birthday party approaching fast, this was far from ideal.

"I still don't get why you want to go alone."

That was what James had said once Peter announced he was going to Hogsmead to hopefully find something nice for Sirius. The answer was simple. Whenever they tried to go together to Hogsmead for a very specific reason, they always ended up getting sidetracked.

So, Peter was making his merry way down the streets of Hogsmead alone, not knowing that he was about to find himself in the company of someone that would change his life.

"Peter!" A feminine voice called, making the boy stop right on his tracks. He turned around, recognizing the source of the sound as Monica, Sirius's sweetheart that never actually became his. "That's your name, right? Peter Pettigrew."

"Monica Ricci." The boy greeted, refusing to show how surprised he had been by the fact that she remembered him. "Haven't seen you in some time."

"Lots of work." The girl replied, catching up to him. "And you? You all disappeared after that one time."

"Lots of drama." The boy answered in similar fashion. "Everyone's been getting used to Lily not shouting at James and Dorcas finally got together with Marlene. And don't even get me started on Remus and Callisto..."

"Oh..." Monica muttered, seriously impressed with how she didn't lash out on the boy. She hadn't heard anything about the girl ever since the ball, nor had she seen any of her friends. The lack of news was killing her, but at the moment she would have rathered if she had been kept in the dark. "Good for them. They look like they'd make a great couple."
