When Valmiki Maharshi heads to a beautiful garden, he witnesses two beautiful birds - a male and a female. As he is admiring these birds in utter fascination, a hunter enters the garden and shoots one of the birds which instantly falls dead. Startled by this sudden incident, Valmiki blurts out a curse to the hunter. However, what was interesting was that the curse came out in the form of a 'Sloka' (a form of poetry he had never uttered before). In distress, Valmiki leaves the garden and returns to his ashram where he considers his curse and feels that it should not have been the first thing he uttered in the form of 'Sloka'. This is when Lord Brahma comes to visit him and soothes him by telling him that he will help Valmiki transform the bad 'Sloka' into a good one. As Brahma guides him, Valmiki realizes that he was being led to write the Ramayana. This helps Valmiki appreciate the sequence of events that led him to this auspicious point.
