Please someone shoot me right here and now. I was sucked into the narrow tunnel of shame that compressed all my limbs.

"It's not porn."

"It is. The cover is deceiving, with its bright, innocent colors. But it's so graphic."

He leaned toward me from his chair, his voice a whisper.

"They say that the books a reader turns to are the ones that fill a specific gap in their life. Lack of romance, lack of action, lack of thrill, lack of emotion..."

His sly smile made my stomach flip.

"Is there something lacking in your life, Hogan?"

I knew what he was thinking. It was probably written all over my face in the ink of my blood.

I hadn't had sex in over a month.

I was fine with being single. It was the horny part of myself that bothered me. I hadn't lived with such a lack of physical touch for a long time.

I could have probably gone and fucked a stranger in a bar to fill that void in me, but I knew that would have only made me more frustrated. I would have felt even more alone when it was over. Even more miserable. So I fought the demons of desire, with less and less alacrity as the days passed and became more and more alike in their bitter loneliness.

I hated Elijah for all the words that came out of his mouth, unfiltered, perfectly capable of reading my mind. I hated his mocking smile, I hated his rings, and I hated myself for feeling so confused.

"No," I replied curtly. "And I'm an eclectic reader, so that doesn't mean anything."

He chuckled and returned to his position on the chair.

"Little liar."

He was right, I was brazenly lying. Romances made up more than 3/4 of my reading. I decided to counterattack.

"Nice try, but you won't be able to dodge the crucial question: have you read that so-called porn book?"

"What do you think?"

"You probably stopped within the first few pages," I began. Then I grinned and leaned towards him. "But curiosity got the better of you, and you picked it up and read the whole thing. Even the sex scenes."

He laughed as he slid his ring on his finger. He moved it back and forth absentmindedly, and my dirty, perverted mind couldn't help but bubble at the gesture.

"You're right," he finally admitted. "I've read everything."

He looked me straight in the eye with a glint of amusement.

"It was a... pleasant read."

Suddenly, I imagined him reading and going through several emotions. First his surprise, then his curiosity and, despite himself, his excitement.
