I'm realizing there are so many more nonbinary people out there than we are lead to believe.
I know like 17 nonbinary people and while I met most of them through my school's pride group, I met four of them in completely non-queer environments. Four is a really large number given that we are supposed to be rare and weird. And that's just the people who are out to me.
I swear the statistics on how many people are trans are completely broken. I know way more trans people than is statistically probable. But I think the reason behind this is that I am obviously queer, I go out of my way to look as gay as possible, and because of that, I seem safe to come out to. People are way more likely to answer honestly when I ask what their pronouns are than when some random survey asks them for their gender identity. Plus I ask every queer-looking person I meet what their pronouns are.
And I look gay specifically so other queer people feel safe around me. I want people to know, just from looking at me, that I will accept them.
But yeah, there are more of us than we think.
