Chapter 19

•Emma's POV•

I call Kayden and his voice sounds hoarse. "Are you okay baby?"
"I can't talk right now." I hear something shatter and he hangs up and I look around. What was that about?
I start running down the street and finally reach his street. I notice the Charger parked outside Braeden's house. Ew.
I run to the door and stand there for a minute, trying to catch my breath. "Stop!" I hear Kayden gasping for air and I see a shadow move to the door. I run around the side of the house and see someone come out.
It's his Mom. She's smoking a cigarette and walks around the deck until it burns out. I hear the door shut and walk back quietly.
"Ah!" I hear Kayden scream again.
What is going on in there?
I hear someone crying, and it takes me a second to realize it's Kayden.
"That hurts stop!" I back away slowly from the door and run to Braeden's house.
I get ready to knock on the door, but I hear someone coming and I just go to Saylor's house, picking up a magazine.

(Later That Afternoon)

"Eh." She never looks up from her magazine, "I'll be at Kayden's." The doorbell rings and she rushes down the stairs, moving me out of the way. She open the door and smile. "Hi Aaron."
"Oo, he is cute!" I fake squeal and leave her house, reading a magazine I just bought about signs of abuse.
I walk back over to Kayden's house and listen. Silence.
I start to turn around and hear a loud bang. I run towards the door, pressing my face to the glass. I hear a scream and someone crying.
I walk away from the door and see the handle move. I jump into the bush and lol back at the door. I see Kayden step outside, shirtless, with a black eye and cuts all up and down his back.
What happened?
He bends over and sits down, like he can't move.
I'm tempted to call to him, but after seeing what I see next, I'm glad I didn't.
I see a man figure come out of the house and drag him inside. "You're a mistake! Don't you understand your mother and I never wanted you!" The door shuts and my heart shatters.
"Emma?" I jump and turn around to see Braeden. "What are you doing in the bush?"
"I thought I saw a ladybug."
"You're such a bad liar. Seriously, why are you watching Kayden's house?"
"I heard a really loud noise in there and I didn't know what was going on."
"Whateverrrrr." He walks away and I get out of the bush, quickly darting back to my house.
