AFTER MARCHING down the large hallway, we approached a gigantic door. It lead to a long wooden table that had a feast on top.
⠀I'm pretty sure we had assigned seats because the girls all knew where they were going. I followed Mackenzie and sat by her.
⠀"Hey," she whispered. "Don't talk too much. They get mad."
⠀I nodded as younger girls, most likely servants, came in with pitchers of dirty water. A blonde haired lady arrived, hair in a white bonnet. She was small. I recognized her voice. She was the one who yelled at Mackenzie.
⠀"All of you may sit down now," the woman ordered. We did what we were told. "We have a new girl who already got lost on the first day." The girls laughed, even Mackenzie. Her laugh seemed forced.
⠀"Where were you, deary?" Asked the German woman. I didn't answer. So, she repeated, "Where were you?" Mackenzie nudged me with her elbow. I knew I had to answer...with a lie.
⠀"I can most certainly tell you I was in my room the whole day," I replied with a weak voice.
⠀"Hmm..is that so?" I could tell she didn't like me already.
⠀"Yes," I said with a strong tone.
