Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can emerge as a result of witnessing or experiencing a traumatic incident. A traumatic experience is defined as a potentially fatal occurrence, such as military warfare, natural catastrophes, terrorist acts, serious accidents, or physical or sexual assault in adulthood or youth.

Most trauma survivors, given enough time, return to normal. Some people, however, will experience stress reactions that may not go away on their own and may even worsen with time. These people may develop PTSD.

Ordinary events can serve as reminders of the trauma for people suffering from PTSD, triggering flashbacks that can cause a person to lose their sanity or reenact events in the form of images and sounds from the traumatic event.
