End

Amaia

My name is Genesis.

It means origin, the start... beginning.

My mother gave me that name because my father told me that her life has just been started when the day I was born. That is amazing and heart-melting but to tell you this... I hate my name. Because of its meaning. It looks like I was just born to make someone feel alive, I hate it more because I am living for someone yet I can't even feel my own life.

My name is meaningful, unlike my life. I don't know why I was born and why am I here in this cruel world we have. I know the meaning of my name, but I don't know what's the meaning of my life.

"Did you know what's the meaning of your name?" Paciano Cavallero suddenly asked me while I'm looking at the vineyard of our family here in our hometown in Panay.

I looked at him but didn't say a thing. It's because either I answered no or yes, he will anyway tell me that. I know him even I'm just a four years old kid.

Yes, four years old.

But even I'm just a four years old kid. I know the answer to his question. My father told me when I was three years old. Hindi ko lang sigurado kung 'yun bang pangalan ang tinutukoy niya. I mean... he was calling me 'Isabelo' the reason why I don't like him. It's like... whenever he calls me 'Isabelo', I feel like he is mocking me because it came from his very beloved wife. Isabela Cavallero. Anyway, the name 'Isabelo' sucks. I hate it. I don't know why my parents name me after my grandmother.

He laughed raspily as if something is funny even there's nothing. It's his habit, laughing and laughing even nothing is to laugh about- The reason why I find him weird. I am honestly afraid of getting old if I'm like that in the future. Like Paciano Cavallero. I love him but I don't like to be this old man.

"Oh, boy. Of course. You didn't know." Aniya at umiling-iling. "It's beginning, Genesis. Your name means the beginning." Then he laughed for no reason.

"I know," I said.

His laugh faded and looked at me. He then cleared his throat and continue his story.

Umiwas ako ng tingin at binalik ang tingin sa ubasan.

"Your parents gave it to you because they think their life begins when you came..." He sighed. "Do you know that they thought you're a girl when you're still inside of your mother's womb?" He asked sounding like he was telling a trivia.

I don't know about that. I didn't speak my thoughts out and remain looking at the farm. Alam ko naman kasing magsasalita at magsasalita pa din ang matanda kahit na hindi ako sumagot sa kanya.

As I've said, I know him.

"When they thought that, they think a great name for their baby girl."

I made a face. Sounded weird cuz he's talking to me.

"The name is... Amaia."

I looked up at him, slightly arching my brow. "Your name was supposed to be Amaia if you're just a girl but it turned out that you're a boy. A handsome one." He smirked.

"And do you know the meaning of that name?" Taas ang kilay nito sa akin.

"What?" I spoke for the first time. Curious.

"The end." He said.

I frowned.

"Why that name?"

And why does he know about those things?

I tilted my head a bit.

I don't know if he's actually saying some truth o baka gawa-gawa lang niya pero mukhang hindi naman siya nagsisinungaling. Also, I don't think he's capable of telling lies, especially for a kid like me, his grandson. So I think he is really telling some truths.
