Ambition

Too much ambition can be the death of a man. ... Or of many, if he can persuade them to follow.
~Lynette Hill

It was a quiet Sunday evening,
Walking by the beach alone,
Sand intermingled with bare feet,

hair dancing with the sea breeze,
the salt in the air....all at ease.

I was collecting little seashells,
pretending they were hiding pearls,
putting them to my ear,
hearing mermaids whisper to the ocean.
and waves crashing on distant horizons.

I saw it - shining like a lost diamond,
a small broken piece of sky,
I picked it, saw the sky through the glass,
They looked the same, the glass and the sky.

I carried it everywhere,
to home, school, shops, and dreams,
showed off to my envious friends,
like a trophy bestowed upon me,
my little sky, growing up with me.

Then one day, it grew too big,
carried me in arms, lied to me,
no one I knew, now recognized me,
my shadow too walked away from me,
the man in the mirror is a stranger to me.

So, I went back to the beach,
dug the sand where hands could reach,
threw inside, the little piece of sky,
to bury its memories and say goodbye.

But, I was naive and oh so wrong!
I was weak and my sky so strong,
it choked my heart and tied my hand,
me and my sky, lay buried in the sand.
