"Yeah."
"Oh." He uttered. "It's been a while since I've had bikers in here. Make sure they get the best treatment."
I was taken back by the sudden three sixty of his attitude but didn't have time to digest his reaction as I was being called. Ace beckoned me over with two fingers, the smirk still plastered over his face.
"What's this sorry doll?" He asked and my heart suddenly raced at the word 'doll.' Snap out of it I told myself before peering over at where he was pointing on the menu.
"That's a good choice." I admitted, nodding my head. "That's Mels Big Bopper, it's a cheddar cheese burger topped with onion rings and bacon strips."
"Could you tell me a bit more about the burger please?" He asked. "You know I don't want to order any old thing off the menu."
I closed my eyes briefly, trying to keep hold of my calm composure. When I reopened my eyes Ace had raised one of his eyebrows, still smirking at me cockily. "Of course." I told him, plastering an over exaggerated smile onto my own face.
"Our burgers or Melburgers as we call them weigh 7 ounces. They are seasoned with our special Mel Seasoning and are cooked medium-well and are served onto a freshly baked bun. Your meal will be served onto a platter, you can choose a number of sides and you can double up on your burger."
"Oh." He nodded thoughtfully placing his finger onto his chin in thought. "What sides do you have?"
Diesel snickered opposite him but looked up at me pitifully when I glared at him slightly. "Oh yes our sides. Your burger can be served with a cup of soup, some luncheon salad, freshly sliced coleslaw, our signature Mel fries, house-made pasta salad or cottage cheese."
"Oh that's fantastic." He sarcastically said before handing me the menu. "I'll have a chicken quesadilla, some soup and salad and the Hawaiian chicken burger with the Mel fries for my side."
I tried not to show any signs of irritation after he'd made me go through a completely different burger to only pick something else. I nodded as I jotted it down and then turned to Diesel. "And you sir?" I asked politely, my smile becoming a lot more genuine.
"I'll just have the Mels Big Bopper please, no salad." He told me politely, handing the menu.
"Any sides?"
"Just the fries please."
I nodded at them both, making sure I had put down the correct order. "Can I get you any drinks?"
"Just two beers please." Ace told me, holding up his two fingers for extra measure.
"Coming right up." I told them, heading behind the bar and sticking their orders onto the window that sat between the bar and the kitchen. I shouted through the window. "Orders are here!"
"Thanks Ava!" Jamal poked his head round the corner, walking towards me to collect the piece of paper. "How you feeling? Heard you was in hospital?"
"Oh yeah just an asthma attack." I told him. "I'm fine now don't worry."
He nodded before growing nervous and shuffled on his feet in anticipation. "I've been er, meaning to ask you something." He begun before being cut off by a shout in the diner.
