Chapter 9: Creating Alter Ego

Chihiro analyzes the laptop carefully. After a while he turns to me: "Sure! I can fix it."

"Great!! There might be useful information for us right now inside the laptop. So I'm counting on you." I say

"Yeah, you can count on me... Uhm can I ask why you choose this place to talk about this." Chihiro asks

"There is no camera in here." I answer

"Oh, you are right. Maybe because we are in a bathhouse so there is no camera." Chihiro exclaims

"Yeah, anyways I think we should work on the laptop in here." I say my idea

"Sure! I will do it right now. You can come back later." Chihiro says

"No, I will stay here. If I leave right now, Monokuma will get suspicious and decide to investigate this place." I decline

"Oh, I'm really sorry." Chihiro apologizes

"Don't worry. I want to help you anyways." I say

"Thanks, let's start right now." Chihiro says

Chihiro start working on the laptop.

"...Fujisaki-san, you don't mind if I talk a bit when you are working right?" I ask

"Yeah, I don't mind." Chihiro smiles

Good, it's socializing time I guess.

Shin:(Now then I should choose this topic first.) Do have any ideas what to do with the laptop after fixing it?

Chihiro: What to do with it? What do you mean by that?

Shin: I don't think that we can keep coming to this place from time to time. If the information inside the laptop is locked, we can't just enter this place and stay in here a very long time everytime.

Chihiro: You are right... In that case, I think I know what I should do.

Shin:(Yes, he is heading to the right direction.) What do you mean?

Chihiro: We can just create a program to unlock the information inside it.

Shin: You mean an artificial intelligence?

Chihiro: Yeah, so you know about it too. I'm working on a type of artificial intelligence the world has never seen before. It's what we call a strong AI. It's designed to think like a human, to process any mental task we can. So I think it will be useful in this situation.

Shin: A strong AI? You are really incredible, aren't you?

Chihiro: Well like I said, right now I'm just researching it. I've made lots of progress on the programming side, and the intelligence development but when it comes to actual awareness, it's still a long way off. It might even be impossible...

Shin: ...

Chihiro: I'm not sure how to put it, but... No matter how well designed or complex a program is... No matter how closely the software can simulate the workings of the human brain...I don't think that's enough. If the program is only *simulating* thought, it will always be lacking something.

Shin:(The answer is easy this time.) You mean a soul right?

Chihiro: Yeah, you are really knowledgeable about this, Onigawara-kun. 

Shin: That's nothing really. But you said you are researching about it right? So your research isn't completed yet?

Chihiro: You are right. All I have now is theories, but I will try my best.
