Kuchisake-onna, translated into "Slit-Mouthed Woman", is an urban legend about the malevolent spirit, or onryō, of a woman with a mutilated mouth. She is said to partially cover her mouth with a mask or another object and reportedly carries a sharp tool of some kind, possibly a knife or a large pair of scissors.

According to the legend, she will ask individuals if she is attractive. If they respond with "no", she will kill them with her weapon. If they say "yes", she will reveal her face which shows the corners of her mouth have been slit from ear to ear. She will then repeat her question. If they say "no" this time around, or they scream from fear, she will kill them with her weapon. If they respond "yes" again, she will mutilate their mouths to resemble her own.

To survive the encounter with her, it is said that the individuals may say she is "average", distract her with money or candies, or by saying the word "pomade" three times.

{ I know what pomade is but no clue if there is a different translation in Japanese or what the significance of it is in this legend. Do you guys know? }
