I had something I wanted to say here, but I forgot it, so...

WC: ~500 (I'm sorry haha)

Enjoy!

It wasn't that Xisuma hated Xanthus, no.

It wasn't that he wanted his own brother to die.

It was a simple thing.

Xisuma didn't think he could face Xanthus after what had happened last time.

He's a Watcher.

A WATCHER.

Is it my fault?

Of course it is...

If I had just listened...

We wouldn't be here.

I can't face him after this.

I'm a coward, aren't I?

Yes.

And what am I going to do about it?

Nothing.

"Okay, 'Suma," Etho's voice was hard. "If you don't want to go save him, you're going to have to explain yourself."

I can't.

I'm sorry, Etho.

I can't explain this.

"He's a Watcher," Xisuma said instead. "Watchers, except for Grian, can't be trusted."

"Grian wouldn't be here if it were Xay!!" Etho cried. "We have to go back for both of them!" Xisuma sighed.

"Fine,"

I can't escape him forever.

I might as well give in now.

And that was that.

The rest of the Hermits were told about Beef and about the rescue mission.

Doc, Bdubs, Iskall, Mumbo, Etho, Stress, False, Scar, and Ren had all asked to come. Keralis had too, but Xisuma had assured him that it'd be a better idea if he stayed behind, as he could still be recovering from the mindspace's after-effects. A couple more had wanted to come, but Xisuma told them that they had enough volunteers. Xisuma honestly wasn't sure if it was a good idea to bring as many as they were bringing, but there was no going back now.

Xisuma looked at the group of Hermits around him. Sharpening swords, explaining things to each other, still laughing together despite the circumstances. Xisuma loved the Hermits so much, no matter how quirky they were.

There's one last thing I need to do.

POV Shift: Mumbo

It was almost time.

They were heading to face the Watchers.

The creatures that they feared the most.

The creatures that had taken some of them, and had even killed one.

Beef's death, although Mumbo hated that it had to be this way, hadn't been focused on for long.

They would mourn once everyone was in the same place.

Once everyone who was alive was safe.

Then they could slow down and breathe.

Mumbo hated the twisted-ness of it all.

But... that's how it had to be.

Right?

Mumbo wished that reality could be nicer to them for once.

"Before we go," Xisuma said slowly, startling everyone.

"I want to make sure all of you trust me unconditionally."

"We do, 'Suma," Mumbo told him immediately. Xisuma, however, shook his helmeted head.

"No," he murmured. "Unconditionally, as in there should be no secrets between us. No more hiding. No more lies. No more... masks." Mumbo inhaled softly but sharply.

Is he...?

Slowly but surely, Xisuma pulled the helmet from off his head.

The first thing Mumbo noticed were his eyes.

Which were... indigo.

Realization hit Mumbo in a wave.

"I thought only Watchers could have purple eyes."
