BEHIND THE large metal gates, there was a similar-looking community. a dirt path led up to a large three-story brick house with a gray roof, it looked like it would've belonged to someone extremely wealthy. outside there were little huts where people were working at their stations. spaces for livestock were available too.

jesus led the group up the road, letting them get a good look at all the crops as well as the animals. rheagar bounced around playfully, being enthusiastic about the new presences.

before they departed, the man with the injured leg made sure to say a word of thanks to them. the medical specialist offered maggie a visit, which was very kind too.

rosaline smiled at the stranger people, trying to make her appearance seem welcoming. if they were going to be trading with this community it was best to keep good relationships.

"there was a material yard for a power company nearby. that's how we put up the walls." jesus explained, swinging his arms as he strolled, "a lot of people came from a FEMA camp. trailers came with them."

michonne shot him a surprised look, "how did people find out about this place?"

"that's called barrington house. the family that owned it gave it to the state in the '30s. the state turned it into a living history museum." he answered, raising his brows, "every elementary school for fifty miles used to come here for field trips. the place was running a long time before the modern world built up around it. i think people came here because they figured it'd keep running after the modern world broke down."

rosaline pursed her lips, nodding slowly, "pretty smart. if i knew there was a massive house near me i'd go straight for it and try to make camp."

"exactly what we did. those windows up there let us see for miles in every direction. it's perfect for security." the man pointed to the third story, "come on. i'll show you inside."

hastily, rick's group entered the historical home, examining every corner. there were many antiques placed around, decorating it and giving it a homey environment. it seemed cozy.

rosa picked up a porcelain cat figure, "cute." she murmured to herself, wiggling it at daryl who scoffed before eying his surroundings more.

"good gracious ignatius..." abraham breathed out in amazement at the building.

jesus closed the door, making his way to the middle, "most of the rooms have been converted to living spaces. even the ones that weren't bedrooms."

"people live here and the trailers?" rick questioned, eyes flickering around the room.

he placed his hands behind his back, intertwining them, "we plan to build. there's babies being born."
