Brie’s P.O.V

To say I was disappointed is a slight understatement. The long hours in the car had allowed my imagination to rave about what Colby is doing for our first date. Thoughts of a romantic picnic in a field crossed my mind. Or the mere idea of him taking me to a secret, yet, very nice restaurant popped in my head. Even though I knew the last idea was highly unlikely for the fact that he probably wouldn’t take me to a nice restaurant while I was dressed in my PJs.

Still, my mind couldn’t help but wonder...

I guess you can sense my disappointment when he pulled up to a plain, grey house in the middle of nowhere.

Colby cut off the car and looked at me with a smile; I knew he was happy at the confusion rolling off of me.

“Ready?” He asked me.

It was at that very moment that I decided to finally break the silence I created between us.

“Ready? Where the hell are we?” I quizzed.

Instead of answering me Colby looked at the house, I did too.

I saw an elderly woman open the front door; a vast smile was planted on her olden face. She placed her hand over her heart and stared at Colby with admiration.

Colby gave a warm smile and got out of his car. With long strides he walked over to the woman and engulfed her in a bear hug. After a few seconds he released her and spoke a few words.

Their heads snapped in my direction. I froze in the passenger seat, unsure of what to do. Colby rolled his eyes and walked over to my car door. With a pull on the door handle, he opened the car door. “Are you gonna get out?” He asked me.

I nimbly unbuckled and stepped out of the car. My head was filled with wonder of where we were, and who the woman was that Colby seemed to know so well.

A warm hand was placed on my back and I looked up to see Colby standing beside me. He gave me a smile, as if assuring me that nothing was going to happen to me. Glancing over, at the aged woman, I stepped forward, towards her. It wasn’t but a millisecond later she was hugging me. “Oh, it’s been forever since I have seen you, Brie!” The woman stated as her bony arms hugged me tighter and tighter.

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion as to what she meant. It was if she thought we’d met before. “Huh?” I questioned as she let go of me.

Her brown eyes gazed at me with happiness. “Oh, you probably don’t remember me. I am Stella, Colby’s grandmother. Your grandmother would bring you over when you were a little baby. I remember as if it was yesterday, when you and Colby were in a playpen together and fighting over the binky.”

To say I was confused would be another understatement. For, I had no memory of Colby and me hanging out when we were little. In fact, I thought the first time we met was in first grade was when he spilled milk on one of my new dresses that my mother bought me.

The hand on my back moved, making me come back to reality.

I couldn’t help but look at Colby and see if he was as shocked as I was to find that we knew each other before first grade, when we officially became enemies.

You can guess my surprise when he looked like he knew this all long.

“Really?” I asked as I turned back to the elderly woman.

She gave me a nod, “Yes, your grandmother, Mary, and I were college buddies. We kept in touch through the years, had the occasional lunch together. But when Colby and you were born we made special play dates just to hang out more.”

I gave a bob of the head, “W-what stopped the play dates?” I questioned.

Stella looked at me with a grim expression. Her eyes clouded over, and then I realized why the play dates had ended ... My grandmother, Mary, died.

I felt my stomach flip when I started to put myself down for forgetting the fact that my grandmother died…

“Come children, I will make you two lunches,” Colby’s grandmother spoke as she attempted to change the subject.

Colby laced my finger with his and grinned, “Good, I am starved.”
