Their name stands for Ideal of Idol. The members were chosen from a pool of 101 trainees from 46 companies through the reality show Produce 101. They promoted four albums for 10 months and then disbanded in January 2017. Nayoung and Yoojung wrote the rap lyrics to their debut song Dream Girls and Chungha arranged the choreography for their song "Whatta Man". I.O.I promoted as a full group and as sub units. The members of the first sub unit are Nayoung, Chungha, Jiegiong, Sohye, Yoojung, Doyeon, and Somi.

After disbanding, many members debuted with groups or solo. Nayoung and Kyeolkyung (Pinky) debuted with Pledis' girl group Pristin. Sejeong and Mina went back to Jellyfish's Gugudan. Chaeyeon returned to her group DIA and Yeonjung joined Cosmic Girls. Finally, Yoojung and Doyeon debuted with Fantagio's girl group WekiMeki. Sohye returned to acting and Chungha debuted as a solo artist.
