The members of Twice were determined through the survival show "Sixteen" which aired May 2015. It featured 16 trainees and the final nine members are Jihyo, Nayeon, Jungyeon, Sana, Momo, Mina, Tzuyu, Dahyun and Chaeyoung. TWICE was originally meant to debut with 7 members but JYP decided to add Tzuyu and Momo as well. Tzuyu was added solely based on viewer's opinions and JYP chose to add Momo. Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Sana were originally meant to debut in a group called 6mix but a JYPE trainee Cecilia left, cancelling their debut.

The name TWICE comes from the members vowing to "wow their fans once through their ears and twice through their eyes". They have been dubbed the 'Nation's Girl Group' and the 'Top-Trend Girl Group' and their highlight points in their choreography have gone viral.
