Dean hunted solo most of the time. Castiel checked in on him. Father had given the angel other charges to watch over. He always took the time to check on his favorite.
Once in a great while Dean worked with John. His father called him in on a case and Dean worked hard, still trying to prove he was worthy of staying with the man.
It was on this case that Dean met Cassie. They spent as much time together as the young man could spare. The angel watched over the budding romance with concern. He knew Dean slept around quite a bit but this one lasted longer than a day or two.
Dean planned a special weekend with the girl. John was away and the young man was told to stay in case anything happened.
Castiel decided to stick around and watch over the situation.
