Chapter 16

Clementine POV

The ferocious tension between the daughter, the mother, and myself in the vehicle was disgustingly overwhelming, and all I wanted was fresh air or to leap across the state line to get away from everyone. Every day in this wretched place, I got myself into deeper, worse situations.

The Jeep drove on the smooth pavement, leading to what I suspected was something built by a rat. We drove by a strongly fortified gate, and I didn't feel very comfortable with at least five guns pointing up my nose.

At the very least, I was shackled again as she removed the shackles before I entered the car.

From then, the car ride was nothing more than her kid gazing at me via the rearview mirror, and I returning the gaze. I believe we have both accepted that we despise one other.

I hope she understands that I was not dating her mother, that I wanted nothing to do with her mother, and that it was actually the other way around. The twisty path eventually led to a few dwellings that joined together. My eyes widened at the splendor, as my mind had not painted such a gorgeous vision of where she would reside. I expected it to be deep, smack in the slums, with hungry souls staring about.

But all I saw along the road were palm trees, smooth pavement, perfectly green lawns, and large mansions.

"Great." I murmured, not thrilled that the Mafia and her child were having a better life than me. They were in paradise, while I was in dooms land.

"Not what you anticipated, huh?"

"Doesn't change the reality that this existence still isn't perfect."

"I did not pick this life; it chose me." She remarked this when she parked her car. "Don't think of running when you get out of this vehicle."

"I was thinking about that."

"Good. You wouldn't get far; more than 5,000 rounds ripped through your body, without doubt."

My mouth dropped open. And I thought that staying in the car was a better and safer alternative. As much as I considered terminating my life when things did not go my way, I just did not want to feel gunfire penetrating my body before dying.

When the car door slammed, I startled and looked out the tinted window to see Amber, who grinned at me despite not seeing me. It was as if she knew how I had reacted. I despised this child. This youngster, I'll have a tutor in a minute. Nikolai opened my door. "I had no idea you had the courtesy to open doors for a woman."

"And I never thought a lady with your reputation could steal."

My teeth clenched as she delivered her words perfectly. I wish I could punch her in the face.

"Amber, go prepare the room. I'll bring her in a minute."

Amber nodded before stepping to the huge entrance, which I knew led to a lovely home. I confessed it: I was envious of their lives. She was doing crap and living the dream, while those who worked hard were hardly surviving. I rolled my eyes as I stepped out of the car, but I quickly grabbed her. If I get shot, she will get shot as well.

"Would you look at that? Ms. Yuri is holding on to me."

"Don't take it personally." I mumbled. We approached the door together, as if we were joint twins. She opened the door, and the frame was large enough that we could both step through without being stuck. As my eyes began to take in her mansion, which resembled a dwelling, I forgot that she dealt with narcotics and criminality. Her residence didn't reflect that at all.

"Where will I be tutoring her?" I said. I couldn't help but admire her abode. "Have a wonderful place."

"Wouldn't it be nice to screw you all throughout."

"Don't get cocky."

"With? I know my house is fantastic. Unlike yours."

"Hmph. Maybe if you keep it up, I'll steal all your money and construct a mansion like this."

"You can't steal from me."

"I've done it once." I couldn't believe I was standing in the center of a big mansion, looking at all the expensive chandeliers hanging down and talking about stealing from someone who, despite all this splendor, might have a dark cellar to bring me there to kill me for stealing from her in the first place.

"I found out in seconds."

"Believe me, taking your money would take me less than a second to get out of Florida."

"Pff!"

She motions for me to follow her up the huge staircase. Everything about her home was wonderful.

The stairs had a lot of twists as we went up it, and I felt dizzy. I cling to the handle for dear life.

I was attempting to avoid falling and breaking my neck. I couldn't help but wonder how I was going to educate someone I hated, and she hated me as well. "Nikolai, maybe you could hire another instructor or professor to aid your daughter."

"Not everything is about me, doll."

I was astonished to hear such words come out of her mouth, because in this town and state, everything revolved around her. Everything includes her. Everyone recognizes her. Everyone worked with her. So, she was bluffing.

Growing up, I despised mathematics and its instructor, which was odd given that the teacher was my father. He expected the best from me without blinking an eye. I couldn't tolerate learning math, and I understood it was because my hatred prevented me from learning from him. When I changed classes the next semester, I was doing well.

Amber refuses to learn English since both I and her despise each other. In just a short stack of time.

"Why?"

"Amber requested that you teach her."

I scoffed. I try not to laugh so I don't fall down these awful steps. She didn't ask for me. Nah, she just asked me to make my life a miserable hell. And it's extremely awful because we hardly know each other and disliked each other.
