EXT. MARKET – DAY

MS and HR walk through the market on a sunny day. They approach a booth selling jewellery and makeup products. HR stops to browse.

MI-SOOK
Miss, you stay here and look around. I'll go on ahead and get your ink and brushes. It looks very crowded at the head of the street and I don't want the people to jostle you.

HYE-RYUNG
(smiles)
That isn't necessary, Kim Mi-sook. I don't mind the crowds.

MI-SOOK
I know, but I think His Majesty would prefer it. Just stay here. I'll be back as soon as I can.

HR continues to browse. A 7-year-old boy in peasant's clothes runs up to HR and starts peering at what she is choosing. HR looks through lip colours, uncertain if Gwi would like brighter or darker colours. The boy points to one of the darker shades of red.

BOY
That one. He'll like that one.

HYE-RYUNG
(laughs)
Who will?

BOY
Aren't you shopping because you're in love? Girls always start to wear makeup when they're in love.

HYE-RYUNG
(still smiling)
Yes, I suppose you're right. How do you know he'll like that one?

BOY
He likes darker shades.

HYE-RYUNG
(playing along)
And what about hairpins?
(points to the choices)
What do you think he'll like from these?

BOY
Dragons! He likes dragons. I prefer tigers.

HR looks through and pulls out a pin with a dragon.

HYE-RYUNG
This one then? You think he'll like this one?

BOY
(considers it)
Hold it up so I can see how it looks.

She holds it up behind her head and the boy scrunches his face.

BOY
It's not very girly. Something with a flower would be better.

He pulls out a pin with a flower on it and hands it to her.

BOY (CONT'D)
That's the one.

HYE-RYUNG
How can you be so sure?

BOY
I'm smart for being 7, lots of people think so.

HYE-RYUNG
All right then. Thank you for your help. I trust that you have chosen rightly.

The boy runs off into the crowd as MS returns with her shopping.

MI-SOOK
Well, that was certainly an excursion. I'm glad you didn't come, miss. The streets are so dusty today. Have you found anything you like?

HYE-RYUNG
Just these two for today, if we can.

MI-SOOK
(laughs)
I think you have license to buy the whole market, my dear. His Majesty may be disappointed if I don't bring you back with more.

HYE-RYUNG
No, this is more than enough. Thank you.

MI-SOOK
(to the vendor)
Excuse me. We'll take these.

Vendor comes over and MS completes the purchase. HR looks around for the boy who has disappeared.
