we'd been locked in the room for over an hour.

Rafe and i reclined on the sofa as Kiara tried to look for an escape.

"we're not getting out until he gets what he wants, ya know." i mimicked Singh's voice.

Rafe laughed.

"how are you laughing?!" Kie turned on us. "Portis was just shot-"

"no, that was like, an hour ago." Rafe yawned.

"this Port guy meant nothing to us." i added.

"he was trying to-"

"help you?" i raised an eyebrow. "yeah, you said."

"god, you're insufferable!"

i shrugged.

she flipped me off and banged on the window.

"Mr Singh," she hissed. "i need to speak to Mr Singh."

"what the hell are you doing?" Rafe got up and pulled her away from the window.

"like i owe you an explanation." she wrenched her arm out of his grip.

"think for a second," he glared at her. "Kie, what are you doing?"

she stormed over to the door and hammered on it. "hello?!"

"hey!" i sat up. "what are you doing?!"

"don't talk to me!" she yelled, continuing to bang on the door.

"you're lying," i glared at her back.  "you know where the diary is."

"i don't."

"you don't?" i scoffed. "okay,"

"i wish-"

"okay!" i cut her off.

"listen, i wouldn't tell us either." Rafe tried a gentle approach. "but he's not gonna believe we don't know something, alright?"

"hey!" Kie resumed her assault on the door.

"just think!" Rafe's voice rose. "look around, Kie."

"we're the only friends you've got." i finished his statement.

the lock clicked and the door creaked open.

"whatcha do?" a soldier entered.

"i need to talk to Mr Singh." Kie stood up tall. "i have something to tell him."

the soldier stared at her for a long time, turned his gaze to Rafe, then to me.

"yes." was all the man said.

Rafe paced up and down before the window, rubbing his head.

the soldier opened the door for Kie and followed her out, locking the door again behind them.

"fuck," Rafe breathed heavily.

"calm down, Rafe." i warned.

too late.

he picked a vase up off of the table and hurled it at the wall.

the porcelain shattered into a million pieces as it hit the wallpaper.

i sighed and put my head in my hands.

"we're gonna get out of here, ok, June. i'm gonna get us out." he approached me.

"how, Rafe? you've seen the guards, you saw what he did with Portis, you've seen the plantation the house sits on!" i exploded.

"i promise you i'll get us out."
