Chapter 38:

Not again! Haven't I been through this torture already? Groaning, I surrender. Mr. Grey (at least I think it's him) is smirking, his knife sparkling with blood. My mind is wandering and the first thought that goes to my head is where is Rose?

Answering my question, I hear a shriek, and immediately cover my ears to avoid becoming deaf at this sound at a pitch evil enough to break glass. I sneak a glance at the person holding Rose captive and I immediately wish I could grab the knife and gouge my eyes out. Holding Rose firmly by the shoulder is Gavin. He is smirking like he just found out Satan took over the world and murdered me in the most brutal way possible.

My imagination wanders too much.

I have nothing to fight back with, and considering I'm a mere mortal, I can't use powers. Mr. Grey comes charging out me, I try to shield my face and chest, though it'll be no use, really. Sighing, I see Gavin let go of Rose and move his hand in a swift motion, almost as if he were shooing someone away. My mouth (as well as Rose's) is wide open. Mr. Grey is on the floor, possibly dead, though I dare not check. "Hey, someone had to do it sooner or later." I continue to stare at him in disbelief. "Hey Owen, do you mind if I talk to Rose alone for a minute? I promise I won't hurt her."

I furiously shake my head no. "Thanks for helping us, appreciate it, really. But there is no way I'm leaving you alone with her." I see Rose's shoulders relax and Gavin sighs.

"Fine, you can here it too," he says to me. Then he turns to Rose. "Rosie, I'm so sorry I hurt you and took things from you and that I hurt Kyle and did that stuff to Grace and - " He paused for a breath.

"Whoa! Back the truck up! What did you do to Grace?" I nearly scream at him. Rose looks genuinely concerned as well as insanely confused.

Gavin sighs again. "I'll explain in a minute. Look, I know neither of you trust me right now. I had to help you and I will help you. And Owen," he turned to me. "I'm sorry I lied to you." I gave him a confused look. "About the powers. Take a closer look at the Hell pamphlet when you get a chance and use that brilliant mind of yours to figure it out."

"I threw it out." I confess. Gavin pulls another one out of his pockets. I nod at him to say thanks.

Anyway, sorry I lied, sorry I hurt you, I'm sorry. I know you won't trust me but maybe you could forgive me? Anyway, about Grace. Okay, my mom isn't the greatest person around, we've established that fact already and I maybe asked her to keep Rose safe because she's special. You know she's not an elemental." I looked at him, confused. "Oi!" he screamed. "Rosie, you never taught him the fundamentals of being an elemental?"

"I-I didn't know he was one!" She stammered pathetically.

Gavin rolled his eyes. "She's of the rare type. Her father is, in fact, Apollo. You, Owen, have normal parents, but you are still more important than the majority of the population. Some of us have powers that have to do with the elements with the exception of a few extras. Like I'm part healer but I also have the Hell power. Contradicting, huh? Not if you use it correctly." He smirked. "Rose will be alright, but still I must worry, she's vulnerable. I hired my Kyle to teach her to fight."

"That's where he went!" I blurted.

"Too much talking." Rose complained.

"Indeed, Rosie, you're right, I should be going now, you guys need to run, dark times lie ahead and you best not be around when they are. The portal is almost over, just run through the stone opening over there and you'll be in England. I'll be of assistance whenever I can. And Owen, be clever with your powers. This is all I can say. Goodbye."

With those last words, Gavin disappeared. Rose gave me a quizzical look and in silent agreement we ran towards the opening to the world. It can't be that easy. I splashed through puddles as I ran.

The world is so close to me, slamming through an invisible barrier, Rose and I land in an alley. I'm guessing we are in England if Gavin's word is true. I would have been so happy to be here if the circumstances were different. Sitting against a wall, I pulled out a folded piece of paper that had been begging to be read. So let's see what Hell has to say.
