Chapter 33:

Her words stuck in my brain all night. "You're a mortal." I didn't come out for dinner and stayed in bed until David came in at the break of dawn to yank me out of bed.

"Come on, kiddo, let's go on an adventure."

"Let's go for an adventure in my bed." I was too tired to think about what I had said but I was vaguely aware of David doubled over, laughing.

Holding his side, he said between gasps, "Let's...go find...her."

Not being able to argue over something like that, I threw myself out of bed and quickly got dressed in my most comfortable outfit. I ran out, gobbling down my breakfast of eggs and bacon. I pecked Grace on the cheek and said goodbye to David's mom. She was smirking as I stumbled out the door. I didn't ponder my decision but I ran up to the nearest tree. (It was quite hard to find shade in the outback!) Grabbing David's shoulder, we disappeared into the small shadows that were cast over us. David brought an umbrella that he held over us to create shade. I wasn't sure how it would work, but the rulers of traveling ignored this trick. Any person passing by would merely see a floating umbrella.

I was dying of tiredness and thirst but I kept going, running on adrenaline. I just had to make it halfway across the world and across and ocean...and shit. I stopped running and David and I appeared in thin air. We landed in a forest, likely a suburb of Sydney. I took a swig of water and lay on the ground for a few minutes before I got the energy to say, "I need energy. Fire portal." David nodded and grabbed my wrist, concentrating on giving me enough energy for me to create a fire portal. I didn't feel any different but all the same, I created a ball of fire that David and I stepped through.

My skin felt moist and my heart was beating rapidly. I couldn't be a mortal if I could do this! I was so lost in my thoughts I didn't realized we had come to the end. Continuing to walk, I tripped over David. We tumbled into rocks and flowers. Making sure nothing was broken, I stood up.

I checked my surroundings, exploring parts of the mountain. I heard a clapping behind me. Thinking it was David, I ignored it. He is way too sarcastic for me. Continuing to walk, a cold hand grabbed my wrist, turning me around. A girl with hair the color of my fire portal stood in front of me.

"Rose!" I gasped. She leapt into my arms. It's been a year since I've seen her smiling face. Actually I did see her, but it was actually David pretending to be her. It's been a year since I've seen Rose. "I've missed you," I whispered to her.

"I've missed you more, Owen." She said, smiling.

Now, now, I know I must seem incredibly cliché. Even my brain is telling me to stop being so cliché but I can't help it, I'm a hopeless romantic. Reading my mind, Rose spoke up.

"Stop thinking so much!" She said, hugging me tighter. (I didn't know that was actually possible!) Our lips connected, her nose pressed against mine. Her leg was twisted around me and it felt awkward but I didn't mind even the slightest. I'm just so happy to be with her.

Behind me, I heard a whistle. I was started and Rose and I broke apart. David stood behind us, smirking. "Well, well if it isn't Rose. I would've never guessed! Charming, really. Thought it would've taken you a while longer to get over me, but sadly, I am mistaken."

"Gavin," She said, through gritted teeth. (Gavin?!)

"Hey there, love."

"Don't call me that!" She growled. I held Rose closer and even though she was agitated, she seemed calmer in my arms.

Moving closer to us, David spat at her. "I'll call you what I want. What do you call me?"

Rose gulped, trying to hide behind me. "Daddy."

"He's your father?!" I whispered to her. She violently shook her head no. Oh.

(A/N: Ooh who saw that coming? Things are going to be moving pretty quickly from here on out. So close to 1K yet so far...thank you guys so much!!)
