Chapter 5:

She had a smile on her face like she was happy about absolutely nothing at all. Her eyes seemed to be focusing somewhere above my shoulder. And her eyes were a pale grey instead of their normal ocean blue. Even her hair seemed to be dimming and her eyes started to grow distant within seconds. She seemed not to even see me.

I saw some other young girls eating chicken. Their hair seemed to dim, too. I grew worried. So this is what would have happened to me if I had eaten the chicken. I couldn’t survive forever without eating. I had to escape. I had to break out Grace from this grey monster. If I did not hurry, it might take over her. I could not let that happen. I would not let the happen.

Maybe I could hit her. Maybe I could just steal her and nurse her back to normal. There wasn’t any book about this! How am I supposed to know what to do? I grabbed her hand. I tried pulling her and she wouldn’t budge. It was almost like she was glued in place. Plan B. I picked her up and she let out a shrill scream that made me drop her. Men came shuffling in. Left, right, left, right, left, right. Over and over and over again. They were all in unison, looking like some army powered by computers. But that was near impossible. My sister turning into a grey ghost (grey monster, some sort of creature) was impossible too. I had to do the impossible.

I thanked my quick thinking and the one open window. I had no choice but to jump. I ran. And they chased after me. But I was still faster…I looked down the many stories. Anything is impossible…wait, what? They were closing in on me. Three...two…JUMP!
