When We Were Young (Twilight)

Chapter 9

I wake up in my room to whispers in the hallway. I can see Rose watch me, Edwards back is turned and I know Em is somewhere next to him.

"She's okay. I guess... all the excitement and adrenaline kicked her body into over drive."

Edward's in doctor mode.

"Of course it did, dummy. She hasn't seen you in two years. She was a wreck."

Emmett is in big brother mode. Rose snorts.

Edward says his next words so softly, I almost don't hear him.

"She's still my wife, Emmett."

Em's quiet for a second, but he takes a deep breath.

"Dad's in the hospital, Bella. He's ... he's asking for you."

I make a choking sound and Edward is immediately beside me.

"I..." I can't say anything. Edward takes the phone from my hand, and he starts talking to Emmett.

I look at the picture next to my bedside table of Em, Charlie and me at the airport before Edward and I left.

I don't know how long I sit there, but Edward's voice brings me back.

"We'll be there as soon as we can, Em."
