"Are you ready?" Lewis asked from the front seat and I nodded. I could hear a lot of chatter outside but I knew it what it was. The same people who came to every court date. The cop lovers.

Robyn had already went in with my mom and I just asked for a few minutes alone. I wasn't sure what today held. I didn't know our progress or regression, I didn't know how close we were to being done or not.

All I knew was that everything felt like we were going in circles. The blame game. That's what it felt like.

Lewis tapped on the window to let me know he was opening the door and when he opened it, I sighed when the voices got louder. Here goes nothing, I guess.

I stepped out and raised my head, then froze.

My eyes widened when I saw a bunch of signs with my name and fuck twelve and justice.. holy shit. My jaw dropped slightly as I walked with the help of Lewis and some other guards, my eyes shifting left and right. One sign in particular stuck out to me..

It wasn't the first time. Steven Danes assaulted me too. #Justice4victims

I felt my heart ache at the young looking girl and I couldn't help but break from my path and make my way over to her. "Hi," I mumbled and raised my arms, instantly she fell into them. "I'm so sorry." I said as I hugged her tightly, feeling her body tremble in my hold. "You deserve justice."

"Win it for us." She whispered and I nodded before pulling back. "I'm trying my best." I replied and gave her a nod. "Stay strong, alright?" She sniffed and nodded as I backed away, my head shaking when their voices over powered the ones spreading hatred.

Holy shit. "Thank you.." I breathed out, sure they couldn't hear me but goddamn.

Once we were inside, I saw Mark walk up and pat my back softly. "We have a long day ahead of us, are you ready?"

"Yeah, let's go."

We walked through the lobby and into the court room that was already filled with media and spectators. I made a stop next to my mom and gave her a hug. "Thank you for coming again. You might as well stay in our guest room, Ma." I said, smiling as she pecked my cheek.

"I like my hotel room. Makes me feel fancy." I chuckled softly before smiling at Robyn.

"Where's your head at?" She asked, fixing my button up collar.

"I'm good. I feel good and ready." Her head nodded as she held my face softly. "I can't wait for this to be done so I can stop planning how to talk in court and start planning for our wedding."

A cute smile pulled at her lips as she leaned forward and gave me a soft kiss. "I want a summer wedding."

I hummed against her lips. "We better hurry this up then." I joked before looking over my shoulder when Mark called me. "Okay.. wish me luck." She nodded and patted my cheek softly. "You got this, baby."

I backed away from the chairs and moved over to my designated spot next to Mark. "The run down, I've got Sophia in here and I'm not sure what Mr. Gibbons is planning but I'm almost positive it has something to do with the questions she asked you yesterday and perhaps.. he's going to try to flip it in a twisted way."

I nodded, already knowing that.

"All arise." The guard, officer, whatever he was, said and everyone raised up as the judge walked out. "You may be seated." Then we sat back down.

After the usual opening statements, the first person called to the stand.. Sophia.

I watched her confidently walk up to the stand, say her oath with her hand on the Bible, then take her seat.

Mark walked up first.

"Miss Rojas, how long have you been meeting with Y/n? And is it just once a week or.." He started.

"Going on five weeks and we meet twice a week.

I chewed on my thumb nail, hoping he played to my favor correctly. "And can you give me a run down on how she was when she first started coming to you?"

Sophia glanced at me as she nodded. "To sum it up? Broken." I felt my hand lower from my mouth when I saw the sincere look in her eyes before she switched her gaze to Mark again. "It was hard to get her to open up those first few days.. there was a lot of silent moments and crying.."

He nodded. "And you're highly trained in all areas of psychology, yes? Including patients with amnesia, psychosis, paranoia?" She nodded with a smile. "Have you worked with patients who've conjured up falsities in their heads and treated it as reality?"

"I have."

"Can you tell us the signs for that? And if you believe Y/n to be one of these patients?"

I glanced to my left slightly and saw the other lawyer eyeing her harshly. I feared what he would do when he got to question her... matter of fact, I was terrified.

"One of the biggest signs is no proof or the made up story has an actual undertone." She started and shifted in her seat nonchalantly. "The patient will make up something traumatic if this person has dealt with it before, not out of thin air. A sexual assault victim will make up a sexual assault case later in life because of the unresolved trauma they dealt with as a child. Y/n was not sexually assaulted as a child, therefore she has no reason to 'imagine' or 'make up' this story."

Okay Sophia.. okay.

Mark nodded and backed away with a smirk. "Thank you, Miss Rojas.." He then glanced at Presley as he made his way back to sit beside me. "Your witness."

Presley raised up.

"Miss Rojas, how long have you been a certified Psychiatrist?"

"Five years."

I felt my leg start to bounce automatically when he paced in front of her. "So five years you have dealt with a lot of patients and a lot of their baggage.. must be traumatic, yes?" Her head tilted.

"Traumatic for the victims? Yes." She countered but I could feel a change in the air. I could see it in her eyes.

His head shook. "No I bet, but I mean for you. You failed your last psych evaluation and was only recently reinstated, correct?" My eyes widened when I saw her swallow thickly before slowly nodding. "I asked your office for the reason you were told to take a paid leave."

He grabbed a paper from his desk and turned to the jury as he read it. "Doctor Sophia Rojas failed to meet the requirements of mental stability retaining domestic violence and.. sexual abuse." Instantly people started to murmur behind me in the seats and I felt my heartbeat speed up. "Now, Miss Rojas, can you tell us the reason this bothered you so much?"

Though I could see the freaking out in her eyes, she kept her posture firm and unwavering. "A patient of mine.. an ex patient had just committed suicide because of those issues so I was a little stunt by that."

He nodded. "And losing a patient like that had to be something you wouldn't wish to see happen. Meaning you'd go to lengths to protect this patient."

"Objection, your honor. That's speculation." Mark called out as he shot up.

That's when Presleys' voice raised to a boom in defense. "It is not speculation I am simply questioning the reliability that she," he pointed a daunting finger in her direction which made her eyes widen slightly. "Presents to this case. Sophia Rojas recently lost a patient to suicide because of the very foundation this case is built on. Who's to say she wouldn't go to dangerous lengths to protect her new patient!"

"Improper character evidence, your honor! She is a litigator!"

"Who's to say she wouldn't stand up on this stand, under oath, and lie to ensure the same thing wouldn't happen again!"

"Watch yourself council." The judge said as he pounded his gavel. "Ask your question or call your next witness."

Presley exhaled heavily and glanced at Sophia again who's posture slowly diminished. "Miss Rojas, would you or would you not protect your patients?"

She blinked slowly. "My job is to tell the truth-"

"So tell it." He stepped closer and eyed her down. "Would you, or would you not protect your patients by all means if it meant saving their lives."

She swallowed thickly and glanced at me before exhaling slowly then looking him in his eye. "Yes."

He nodded and stepped back. "No further questions, your honor."

Fuck.

I rested my head on my hand with a sigh. Almost Sophia.. almost..

"I'd like to call Bradley Rogers to the stand." Presley said and I watched the suited man walk up to the stand and sit after doing his oath. "Bradley, can you tell us the extent of your job and what you do?"

He nodded. "Yeah, I work in the LA county jail and I'm like, the officer who guards for the cells and stuff." He sounded so damn wh- not even gonna go there.

"Okay and on average, how many people come in an out of the cells?"

He shrugged. "A lot. Probably every ten minutes."

I clenched my jaw and shook my head. I was literally in that goddamn cell for thirty minutes alone.. Robyn could vouch for that, the fucking receptionist could vouch for that.

"So you're saying sexually assaulting someone would be nearly impossible?"

He nodded. "I mean, I wouldn't know but I'd assume so. Ten minutes isn't enough time for me when consensually having intercourse." I scowled when he smirked smugly and leaned back in the chair. I hated this nigga.

"Okay," Presley gave him a look before clearing his throat. "Can you explain Y/n's demeanor in the cell?"

"Yeah, she was quiet. Seemed like she was brooding or something. Every question I asked or if I'd just look to check on the inmates, she had some smart remark. I don't know, seemed like she took a disliking to me from the moment she walked in."

You've gotta be..

I looked at Mark but he raised his hand with a nod, telling me to calm down but how could I? He was telling blatant lies. What bullshit.

I could feel my leg bouncing again but this time out of anger.

"We have actual footage from the cameras which weren't available because of the peculiar positioning." I looked at the camera and saw it barely captured half of the cell. And the half? Only the spot between my cell and where Chris was.

It showed me messing with him, then the weird ass fight we had through the bars.. then I sat out of view. So these officers were so good that they knew the blind spots? They knew to walk around the back before coming to the cell door.

Wow..

"As you can see, Y/n was engaged in a physical altercation with the same person she had outside of the jail which led to her arrest." I rolled my eyes when he looked at me. "She claims that she was weak, too weak to push this officer off of her but could very much stop herself from hitting the bars and even physically fighting back."

My head shook. This was unbelievable. Looking to the jury, I could see some of them looking like they've basically made up their mind. They made up their mind.. about me.

I looked away and rested my hand on my chin as I felt my leg stop bouncing. I had to face it, I was pretty sure I fucking loss. They had excuses and excuses piled against me. I was delusional, I was crazy, I had amnesia, I hated cops.. and all I had was my word and a hospital report that seemed to be doing absolutely no good.

Presley paused the video and nodded confidently to himself. "No further questions." He smirked at Mark. "Your witness."

Mark looked over at me but all I could do was stare ahead blankly, not even wanting to continue. I lost, what more was to be done?

"Can I call for a recess, your honor? To study the evidence? This video wasn't in the evidence list."

The judge nodded. "Fifteen minutes." He hit the gavel and I sighed before raising up and leaving the room behind Mark.

"You can't look like that." He said as soon as we entered a private meeting room. "You can't show hopelessness. If you do, you'll lose the jury."

"What's the point?" I dropped onto the chair and slouched down with my head on the back. "They made up their mind, I'm done."

"No you aren't." I closed my eyes with a sigh when I heard my moms voice. "Like I said, you have my fighting blood. We don't roll over and die, we fight."

I shrugged to myself. "I'm not rolling over and dying Ma, I'm accepting that the world isn't fair and in their eyes I'll always be inferior."

She grabbed my jacket and I felt myself pulled up. "Fix yourself." She said sternly and I frowned before sitting up straight in my seat. "Who are you right now? Huh? The Y/n I knew since she was fifteen spoke with confidence, tenacity. She said she'd take her high school team to the championships even though they hadn't won in years.. she did it. She said she'd be the first female on a college football team and was. She said she'd join an all male frat and become the president of it.. she did it."

"She also said she'd get with me despite me repeatedly saying it was never gonna happen." I looked over at Robyn as she shook her head with a smile and looked down at the ring on her left hand. "She blindsided the heck out of me and did that."

I smiled softly before leaning my forward, my eyes on the ground. "How do I have confidence in a system that doesn't give a damn about me?"

"By having confidence in me." Mark then added. I looked back up and saw their three encouraging, confident looks and that gave me the.. oomph I needed.

Then there was a knock on the door. "Mr. Woodrow?" A younger looking guy, maybe around my age, walked in and I took notice of the yellow envelope in his hands. "I have something I think you'd like to see."

"Babe," I looked up at Robyn and she reached for me. "Walk with me really quick?" I nodded and raised up, excusing myself before letting her take my hand. "I just want you to know that no matter what happens, I'm proud of you, okay?"

I draped my arm over her shoulder and slowly walked with her down the halls. "Thank you." I mumbled before pressing a kiss to her temple. "What if I lose? What if they get to walk free?"

"There is no losing this one, Y/nn. You fought and gave it all you had, that's all anyone can do. Now if they walk free.. they'll have to deal with the millions of people who've got you back. No matter where they go, this will follow them. But more importantly, think about all the people you've given a voice to." I smiled to myself as she rested her hand on my stomach and lightly tapped me. "Think about the encouragement and confidence you've given to people who may now speak up because you did."

"I didn't think about that." I mumbled, my hands sliding into my pocket. "You really think that?"

"I know that. You don't have social media anymore but I see it.. just by being here today, you're inspiring so many people." I smiled to myself, not truly recognizing the scale of how me just speaking up could evoke so much. That was a good feeling.

After we took a lap around the inside of the lobby, we started back to the office when Mark walked out, his eyes seemingly bugged out of his head. "What happened?" I questioned and as he opened his mouth, another door opened and Presley walked out.

I watched Bradley and Steven walk out behind him smugly. "I hope you spent your money well." Presley said with a smirk. "Because after we beat this case.. we're suing for slander."

Mark simply stared back and held his arm up automatically when I stepped forward. "Not necessary." He said and looked at me with a smile. "Let's go close this."
My eyebrows raised when he held the envelope in his grasp and strutted forward to the court room.

"We'll be right behind you." Robyn said and gave me a quick kiss before pulling me into a hug. "Stay strong."

Then before I knew it, I was back in my chair. "Prosecution, call to the stand." The judge said.

Mark raised up and looked over. "I'd like to call.. Steven Danes to the stand." Steven looked confused, probably since his own lawyer hadn't called him up.

Nonetheless, he raised up and walked to the stand before sitting down. Mark left the envelope on the table and I was curious what was inside but I wasn't about to look.

"Mr. Danes, you've worked alongside Mr. Rogers for how long?"

He looked up in thought. "Probably about.. seven years?"

"Okay, and how many sexual assault charges have you been served with?"

I saw Presley sit up and I felt a smile pull at my lips. For the first time he looked worried. And so did Steven. He shifted uncomfortably and cleared his throat. "A few.. but all were fake. They were dropped."

"Okay. So you've had five sexual assault cases filed against you, this being the sixth, and every one was fake?" Mark stopped right in front of him and crossed his arms behind his back while Presley yelled some objection beside me. "Joined together, you and Mr. Rogers have had ten sexual assault cases opened and closed. All ten were fabricated, you're saying?"

Steven swallowed thickly. "They're all lies. Just like this crazy is lying." He glared at me and I hummed sarcastically. Right..

"Every one, Steven? Including the girls who were told to keep their mouths shut or they'd be shot-"

"He's badgering, your honor, please!"

"Some of those girls wanted it!" Steven suddenly exclaimed and everything went deadly silent. "I didn't rape any of those girls. They just got angry when I didn't want a relationship so they called it rape."

My eyebrows shot up at his snarl. Temper tantrum much?

Mark nodded and wagged his finger at him. "I thought you'd claim that." He walked back to the desk and grabbed the envelope before shooting a wink at me, then holding it up. "This was left at my office. It's a video-"

Presley shot up. "That wasn't in the evidence list and I find the timing of this new discovery extremely questionable."

My kickass lawyer nodded. "I had the same thought when your sudden security footage was here, remember." He smirked at Presley's silence. "I found a note inside, if I may your honor?" The judge nodded and Mark pulled the note out before reading it out loud. "To Mr. Mark Woodrow. I am sending this in because I am terrified of what could happen if I don't. I wish to remain anonymous because I fear what the LAPD would do if they found out I am sending this in. Thank you."

The judge waved his hand and Mark handed the paper in for him to read and look over. "So on the grounds of witness terror, this is liable evidence that I am certain that needs to be shown."

"Go ahead." Presley dropped in his seat with an almost.. defeated look. Did he know what the video was?

Mark handed a hard drive in to the video playing person and we all watched as it loaded. Then..

"These niggas come into my house and think they run it," My head flew back when Steven was seen in, what looked like, a bar with a bunch of other officers. Including Bradley. "I don't care if I gotta put them all down one by one myself."

"Tell them-" Bradley draped his arm over his shoulder with a laugh. "Tell them about tonight."

Steven hunched forward, laughing loudly. "Oh shit, yeah. Pretty ass girl was in tonight but the nigga had a dick!" Their whole bar erupted in laughter and I could feel tears spring to my eyes. But they were the angry tears. The tears when you knew there was nothing you could do about it or you'd be the one in handcuffs. "A nice piece of ass though, I'll tell you that."

"You got a picture?" Someone asked off screen.

"Nah but I know the name.." My eyes moved to Steven who was sat on the stand with shock written over his face. His eyes then met mine. "Her name was Y/n."

Everything after that was blur. People got loud and I mean loud. There were screams of protests but in my favor. A lot of 'lock them up, and death penalty's.' It was a lot and the gavel was hit, but I kept my eyes on that bastard and his were unmoving as well.

It felt like the air was sucked out of my lungs. This was the man who joked about what he did to me with his buddies, then had the nerve to walk in here and call me crazy.

I wanted to kill him.

"Y/n?" Mark called but it was an echo. I wanted him dead. Both of them. "Look behind you."

I broke my gaze and looked over my shoulder to see Robyn staring right at me, her lips calling my attention. 'Relax' she mouthed, somehow knowing. How did she even know.. I swallowed thickly as she mouthed one more thing. 'I'll handle it.' My eyebrows raised questionably but she nodded with a wink, her eyes then moving back to the man on the stand with brooding rage in her orbs. If you look close enough, you could see the flames..

"Your honor," Mark said with a nod. "I rest my case." Then he sat back at my side, handing me a tissue.

I wiped my face with it before crumbling up and leaning forward as the judge looked at Steven, then forward again. "Mr. Gibbons, would you still like to complete your examination?"

He shook his head. "No your honor, I.." he sighed. "I rest my case."

I could feel the weight lifting off of my shoulders. "The jury will leave to deliberate with everything given." I swallowed thickly when the jury raised up and filed out of the room through a back door, one by one.

"So what do we do now?" I asked Mark.

He sighed. "We wait."

And we did. Five minutes became ten.. ten became twenty. Twenty became a pack of skittles and a head massage. Both of which I appreciated.

"So that really works for everything huh?" Robyn asked with a smile as she watched me lean my head back, my mom working her magic.

"Everything." Mom responded with a chuckle. "Stressed? Sad? Sleepy.." I groaned and waved my hand when she stopped. "And if you want her to stop being grumpy with you.." my frowned turned to a smile when she started up again. "Rub her head." She whispered teasingly.

I wasn't even about to protest right now.

"Christmas is soon, you guys know what you're doing?" My mom asked and I opened my eyes to look at Rob, curious for her answer.

Technically it was something we needed to think about now. We had our own home, we were engaged.. it was some serious stuff. We had to decide who's house we would go to, who's house to skip. Considering her folks were in Barbados and mine were in Georgia.. would we go together, separate for the day?

"We haven't even talked about that yet, to be honest." She said humming to herself. "I missed a Christmas with my family when you were in the hospital, so I definitely have to go see them this year." I nodded and looked up at my mom who's lips were pursed.

"So you not gon' see your mother for Christmas is what I'm getting from that nod." My jaw dropped as I let out a laugh when she pushed my head forward. "Move."

"Ma I ain't even.." I chuckled and sprawled across her lap like a baby when she tried to raise up. "I didn't say I was going. I'm sure we can handle a day or two from one another, right babe?" I said and she waved her hand with a nod.

"Yeah sure. It'll be like when we had to take that break." I gave her a look when she smirked and tossed a skittle into her mouth.

"Oh when you messed up?" I questioned knowingly with raised eyebrows.

Her eyes rolled instinctively. "I wasn't even going there."

"It sounded like you were going there."

"Well maybe you need your ears checked."

"I have twenty twenty hearing." I looked up at my mom when I heard her chuckle under her breath. "What's funny, Ma?"

She shook her head before smiling at the both of us. "You both already go at it like a married couple.. it's cute."

I tilted my head before smiling at Robyn who was already smiling at me.

"Y/n?" Our moment was cut short when Mark stuck his head in the room and gave me a small smile. "The Jury's reached a verdict."

Shit.

I raised up and fixed my shirt before nodding. Let's get this done..

"Has the Jury come to its decision?" The judge asked as everyone settled back into the room. One man at the end of the row, a paper in his hand, nodded. "Please read it out for us."

The guy stood up and I could feel my heart beat thumping against my chest at a fast rate but everything was also.. so slow.

I swallowed as he adjusted his glasses and looked down, reading.

"We've come to the conclusion that Correctional officers Bradley Rogers and Steven Danes.." his eyes raised. "Are both found guilty of rape.." My eyes closed, a realized sigh leaving my body at the revelation. "But also on accounts of sodomy, and perjury for lying under oath."

I could hear faint cheers behind me and the judge nodded before thanking the juror. "The LAPD will be held liable to restitute Y/n Y/ln with twenty million dollars on grounds of reparations." My eyes widened.. oh shit. "On accounts of rape in California, that is sentenced to eight years in prison.. sodomy is sentenced to two years.. perjury for five years." Shit it didn't seem like enough.. what was that? Fifteen years?

I looked over at Mark and he nodded at me before looking back at the judge with an almost.. knowing smile.

"Bradley Rogers and Steven Danes, you are both sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison with additional charges regarding the investigation of prior closed cases. Case dismissed." He hit the gavel for the last time and I felt like I could breathe.

Nothing made me happier than watching officers walk up to their own and slap cuffs on their wrists. Other than watching them be pulled out of the court room, their destination known.

"Congratulations." Mark said and shook my hand but I raised up and pulled him into a hug. "Whoa okay.." he said with a chuckle.

"Thank you." I mumbled and he patted my back softly.

"You're welcome. Now go celebrate with your family." I pulled back and looked over his shoulder, surprised when I didn't see just my Robyn and my mom.. but everyone. Jay, Aaliyah, Dante, Ni.. my dad?

I shook my head in confusion before leaving the desk and moving to the rows. "What the hell?" I mumbled with a chuckle. "How did y'all.."

"I don't do well in court after watching Law and Order." Aaliyah.

"I would've fought the dudes." "Me too." Dante, Jay.

"I have a whole child." Ni.

I looked at my dad and he slid his hands into his pockets with a soft smile. "I was always here, just hiding in the back. I'm proud of you." I grinned and walked forward before accepting his hug.

"Thank you." I mumbled, then pulling back to hug the others. "I feel like I haven't seen you in forever." I mumbled as I grabbed my daughter and held her in my arms with a wide smile. "I missed you, Dahlia. Gimme kiss." She held my face and leaned forward when I puckered my lips, then making an exaggerated 'muah' sounds with my mouth after she gave me a kiss. "Thank you, princess."

I bounced her softly and smiled at my family.. my support group. I definitely got lucky because I know not everyone had this. Especially after something as traumatic and horrid as sexual assault. I was one of the lucky ones.

"So can we get out of here now?" Aaliyah asked while looking around. "I feel like Annalise will pop out any minute and give me those eyes."

I gave her a look. "You know Viola Davis is a real person-"

"Still." She mumbled. "It could happen."

"Okay Liyah." I said with a chuckle before nodding my head and we all started out of the courthouse. "You know what we should do?" I said to Robyn as I bumped her shoulder. "We should have a pool party." Her eyes lit up. "Just the fam though, what do you think?"

"I think it's great. Mel's already out, I'll have her pick up some stuff so I can cook." She puckered her lips and she leaned forward to give me a kiss but Dahlia suddenly, as always, put her face in the way. "You are so mean to me. I gave you cheesecake." Rob said with a fake cry, making her giggle.

I quickly kissed them both before walking outside and smiling when the crowd suddenly erupted in cheers.

Continuing forward, a million microphones were stuck out and I stopped.. just this time.

"Y/n, you just won a case against the LAPD where the odds were stacked against you. How do you feel with such a big win?"

I hummed and looked around at the posters and just.. the people. "That verdict didn't win me the case." I said, my head shaking. "That verdict put bad man away, yes. But this won me the case.. this right here, look around. Justice isn't something someone like me wins all the time.. barely ever really. The fact that these people are out here taking a stand and using their voices is the big win. Love wins.. and black wins. Black lives matter, right baby?"

I looked down at Dahlia as she grabbed the mic and babbled into it cutely. "Exactly princess, thank you." I said with a smile at the reporter before continuing forward and ignoring all the other calls from the journalist. I said what I said, they could just copy and paste it.

"You know.." Robyn started once we entered the car (after I reluctantly handed Dahlia off to Aniya since I didn't have a car seat.) "You being all activist and shit..." I raised my eyebrows when she playfully fanned herself. "It gets me a lil hot, baby daddy."

"Oh does it?" She squealed slightly when I wrapped my arms around her waist and quickly hovered over her. "I love you." I whispered and pecked her lips quickly. "You know that?"

She nodded. "I do."

"Ah ah," I shook my head and cupped her face. "Save the 'I Do' for the alter, baby."

Her head tilted up and she connected our lips again, her legs wrapping around my waist.

"Oh God," I smirked when I heard Lewis huff from the front seat. "This again- I thought we agreed on a warning next time?"

I pulled back with a laugh. "There is no warning on love, Lew! Turn the music up!"

"I am!" He shouted back.

Just as our lips connected again, I heard the lyrics..

"Your heart is hard to carry after dark.."

I snapped my head up and Robyn and I both shouted at the same time, "Turn this shit off!"
