Bunker Heart

By JonathanGhost

Her smile promised light, but her eyes bared hidden history
Shackled to her memories, undoubtedly by her misery
Abiding by the rules of war she avoids unnecessary causality
Shamed for her heart, for petty is the new religion and forgiveness is heresy
She takes in any soul with a broken spirit or even a tiny scratch
Her nature is to care, but she can't resist getting attached
A wounded soldier crawls from the fallout of his last love
Hiding in her bunker heart as armageddon happens above
Prepared for the task she coats her hands black
For the darkness that arrives when she plucks the knife out of his lacerated back
His pain facades into smoke, depriving her of all joy until her soul broke.
Ate her food, drank her wine, but not once did he set the table to dine.
Rationing off her good will while he looks for another war.
She was looking for a partner, but she found a chore.
Once the fallout vanished and the sirens bleed an all clear
The soldier now recovered, no longer the wounded deer
He leaves her grace to go fight for another
She begs him to stay, but recieved no rebuddle
Marching  back into the chaos he created
Alone underground, her sorrow emancipated
Free from the jail that was her bunker heart
Ahead of the curve, her demons won a head start
Feeling  the love within die, she begins to weep
Her heart is her grave entombed six feet deep.
