CHAPTER ONE
I don't know what I was thinking when I broke my apartment lease, or when I bought a one-way plane ticket to Italy, or when I told my family that I was "leaving and not coming back." All I knew is that I had had enough of the bullshit in my life.
I am, was rather, a nurse working in Florida. I left my Ohio surroundings to attend the University of West Florida and get lost in the warm weather and adventurous atmosphere.
When I arrived, I was beyond pleased with the atmosphere and knew I had made the right decision. I quickly found a job at a local hospital and all was well. On top of that, college was a blast! Who knew that this place would be crawling with sexy men?! I dated, I flirted, I enjoyed my life.
For once, it seemed as if my life was on the track I wanted it.
A year after relocating , I met Antonio, a sexy Cuban with a heart of gold, fool's gold I might add. He was my everything and I made sure to make him feel like a king. We'd cuddle and make love at night, and I cook for him in the morning.
I thought we were so in love because Antonio was so different than all of the other men, and I wanted to spend my life with him.
Coming home to celebrate my birthday one night , I was so excited. Love making and romance with my true love? Hell yes! But I had the lingering feeling something was amiss. I had ignored the thought all day but it seemed to get worse as evening approached.
Sure enough, it didn't take long for the thoughts to become truth.
Walking into our flat, I put the groceries away when I heard moans and bumping in OUR bedroom.
I ran down the hallway to the bedroom like a woman possessed.
Kicking the door open, I saw my co-worker Julie on top of Antonio. At that very moment it felt like my heart shattered. How could he? On my birthday!
"Mami, it's not what it looks like!" he said softly. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. His manhood is still inside of her! He had some nerve! Knowing he slept with us both made me feel filthy and vile.
"You fucking liar! And Julie really?! We were friends!" Both looked at me with wide 'I've been caught red-handed' eyes. Jennifer's blonde hair was matted and frizzy from sex, Antonio was covered in love bites and still underneath gripping her ass. I began to shake in anger.
I had enough! Antonio pushed Julie off of him then they grabbed their clothes and ran. I let her get past, but Antonio had some explaining to do.
Antonio stared in my eyes and said, "I'm sorry Mami, I love you." His hazel eyes were full with guilt.
I'm not a fool though.
I knew it was because he was caught and couldn't scheme anymore. I threw the promise ring, and the love I had, at his sorry ass and slammed the door.
It felt as if my soul torn into many pieces and those were then thrown into a blazing inferno. Once I was hollowed out and empty, I cried until I fell asleep on the kitchen floor, feeling like I was drowning in my own tears.
