Chapter 58

So they weren't living together after all. He still lives by himself, and time has gone by...and now we are about to have our first winter since entering college. Everyone will be smiling if they eat this. I kept thinking as I packed food into containers. Right about that time, mr. Louis and my fathers old friend is going to get remarried back in their hometown, Rochester. With Mrs Louis they decided to take an overnight trip to attend the wedding.
"Alright well, we'll be back by tomorrow night." Mr Louis said. "Kaitlin, Luke. Please take care of the house until then." He added.
"Yes! Oh, Mrs Louis I made sandwiches for everyone." I said handing her the large lunch box.
"Wow! Thank you! Kaitlin!" She said grabbing the container.
"Kaitlin don't give Luke anything bad to eat, okay?" My father said.
"I've improved my cooking skills you know," I said to him smiling.
"Are you sure you'll be okay just the two of you?" Mrs Louis asked.
"We'll be okay, it's just for one night." I said smiling. "I'm sure Nick is busy." I added.
"But still," she said.
"Mrs Louis you should relax and enjoy your trip for once." I added.
"Well, please take care of the house." My dad repeated.
"If anything happens call me right away okay?" Mrs Louis said.
After all the small talk they left on their way. I turned to Luke,
"So what do you want for dinner?" I asked.
"Whatever you want," he said. I guess he wasn't a big fan of staying home. After cooking I served Luke who was sitting at the table.
"Here you go, I made your favorite hamburger steak." I said placing the plate in front of him. I sat down. "It was hard to make the shape of a hamburger, their size is perfect to eat, please have some." I signaled. He picked up his fork and knife. He took a bite.
"Keith showed me this recipe so I'm really confident," I said.
"Better than it looks," was all he said. Being my normal self I had to picture what he said.
"So it's good? Oh okay. Please eat all the vegetables that go with it." I said. "Oh right we have plenty of soup and rice too." I added. He took another bite but immediately. He started groaning. Was he being rude right now! I frowned. But his groaning didn't stop.
"Luke?" I said. He was almost yelling. "What's wrong?! What's wrong?!" I said getting up and going towards him.
"It hurts!" He yelled I went toward the side he was holding.
"What hurts your stomach?!"
"It hurts so bad!" He yelled. I got really worried.
"Was it because of my hamburger?!! Oh no!!!" I said panicking.

Luke was now on his back, I placed a blanket over him to keep him warm, I was panicking I had a cold towel on his forehead and a thermometer in his mouth. I tried calling Mrs Louis but her phone was off.
"Oh right Nick!" I said scrolling in my contacts. "Wait he doesn't have a cell phone, I don't know the number for his landline." I said.
"Hang in there Luke" I said fixing the towel. I ended up calling my fathers restaurant. Keith answered.
"This is the Jackson restaurant, how may I help you." He said.
"Uh, Keith How Do I treat Food Poisoning?!!" I said to him.
"Kaitlin, is it you? What happened? Food poisoning? You got food poisoning?" He asked.
"No it's not me, it's Luke." I said to him. I was going crazy right now. "His parents aren't here and I can't reach Nick because he doesn't have a cell phone!" I panicked.
"Kaitlin what did he eat?" Asked Larry,
"Uh he ate a hamburger I made myself. Uh maybe it was undercooked?!" I yelled running to the kitchen.
"Calm down. Calm down. You ate it too right?"
"Yes I did,"
"It's not the hamburger."
"But as soon as he ate it, his stomach hurt."
"It can be anything, he needs to be treated by a doctor, call an ambulance immediately," he said.
"An ambulance?! Okay!" I said.
"I'll find Nick and send him to you" I heard Keith say. I hanged up and called 911.
"Uh excuse me?
....
"Can you send an ambulance? Yes this is Nick Louis!! Wait no, it's Kaitlin Jackson!!" I said.
After all the ruckus I finally got Luke to the hospital.
"Hang in there Luke, you'll be okay!" I said to them. "Nick will be here soon, hang in there."
"Nick!" He said in between groans.

After about an hour, the doctor called me in, there were two rooms connected by a huge window. The doctor spoke.
"Presumably, he has an ileocecal intussusception." He said.
" ileocecal?...what is it?" I asked.
"It's a type of intussusception. It's not a serious illness right now, but if we don't do anything, it could be fatal." He said looking at some papers.
"Fatal? No...." I said looking down, once again my eyes started to water.
"Thus, we should perform an operation as soon as possible."
"Th-then please perform an operation right now," I said. "Please save Luke," I added.
"Excuse me, but are you a member of his family?" He asked. I shook my head.
"No..."
"At this hospital, before we perform an operation on a minor we need the family's consent." He said.
"But....his parents are away right now." I said.
"Can you reach other family members?" The docket asked. "We need to have a consent form just in case something happens." I looked down, I don't know what to do... I stood up and walked over to the window so that I could see Luke. Nick... I desperately need him right now.

After they re took Luke's vitals they said that I could go in to see him. I entered the room, Nick.... Is all I could think about. He can save his brother. I placed my head on the bed. Tears were rolling down my cheeks. The door slid open. I saw Keith there with Nick behind him.
"Nick, oh thank goodness. Luke h-he needs an o-operation, they need a f-family consent," I stuttered. He placed his hand on my arm and looked at me.
"I did all the procedures, don't worry." He said walking pass me to Luke.
"Everything will be okay now. Sorry for keeping you waiting," he said to his brother.
"Am I.....going to die?" Luke said, I walked up to them.
"No, you're not, it's a simple operation. It will be quick, you can do it," he said brushing his brothers hair. The door slide open again.
"We are ready, so let's move him to the operating room." The doctor said, two nurses came in with a different bed. They slowly moved Luke onto the bed.
They took Keith, Nick and I outside the room, we followed a nurse.
"Please wait here until the operation is over." She said, leading us to the waiting room.
"I understand. Thank you very much," Nick said to her. I sat down.
"Now you can breath a sigh of relief, Kaitlin. I have to go, Larry is the only one working at the restaurant. He must be really busy," Keith said looking at me. I stood up, and looked at him.
"Thank you so much, please give my thanks to Larry too," I said.
"Sure, I'm glad everything worked out, see you." He said turning around and walking.
"Capello." I stiffened from the sound of Nick's voice. He walked pass me and went in front of Keith, "thank you," he said.
"Aren't you a little too selfish? I don't care if you want to live alone, but you have to tell your family where they can reach you. What would you have done if something happened to Luke," Keith said disciplining Nick. "I also came to Manhattan from New York City by myself, I understand that there might be a real reason to why you want to be alone, but if something happens because of that....not only you but the people around you will get hurt. It's too late if that happens. A man can't live by himself. It's important to say what you're feeling or what you're thinking to the people around you," he looked at me. "well, Kaitlin, I see you around," he said leaving. Nick just stood there.
"Thank you for everything!" I said as he exited the building. I looked at Nick's back. "Nick?" I said to him, he didn't look back, he moved forward and sat down. There was silence, he was thinking, but it felt like he was being cold again. "Oh right! I forgot to call Mrs, Louis." I said taking my phone out and unlocking it. "Oh, there's so many missed calls," I said.
"We are at a hospital, you know." Nick said looking at me. Oh the reception was horrible.
"Right." I said walking out the door.
