Chapter Thirty
I heard Klaus' car coming towards me on the road, so I stepped right onto it and stayed standing there with my arms crossed. He slowed to a stop when he was about twenty feet away from me, and I walked around to the passenger's seat.
"You need to rest," he told me. "You still don't look very well."
"Yeah, I know I don't. And I can't heal your incompetent older brother in case my blood is contaminated."
He smirked a little. "That might be a good thing."
"No Klaus! It's not a good thing!" I shouted. He looked over at me, with his eyes widened a little, then he looked back onto the road. "If Hayley doesn't leave him, he could easily kill her! And he will take your baby down with him!"
He stayed quiet for a moment, but didn't look at me as he continued to speak. "Your point?"
"I know that you say you don't care about Hayley or that baby, but all of us know that you are lying. You are impulsive, it's just a part of who you are. There isn't any changing that. You can feel bad about it and deny that you do, but what will help you get Hayley's forgiveness is a good old fashioned apology."
"You and I both know that I rarely ever apologize," he chuckled.
"And you and I both know that that is a complete lie. You have apologized to me millions of times, I'm sure that you can do it with someone that is your own flesh and blood," I argued.
His jaw clenched. "No, it's different with you."
"How?!"
He didn't reply, just pursed his lips. He was quick to change the subject. "When we get home, you need to sleep."
"I'm fine," I growled.
"No, you aren't! Who's the liar now?!" he hissed.
I bit my lip, turning to look at the road. "I need to find a way to get that blood to Elijah as fast as possible. Either that, or we need to turn around right now and get Hayley out of there."
He didn't reply, but just continued to drive.
"Fine," I growled. "I'll do it myself."
With that, I opened up the door of the moving car, ready to jump right out, when I felt his hand on the back of my neck. "Sorry," he muttered, right before my head snapped to the side and my body fell limp against his shoulder.
Needless to say, when I woke up in what I thought had been only a few hours later, I was more than a little pissed off.
"KLAUS!" I shouted, storming out of my room and down the stairs. "Where the hell are you, you little backstabbing jackass?!"
I came into the dining room to see my two closest friends sitting at the table, while eating what seemed to be breakfast. What the hell? It's morning? How did he keep me out for so long?!
"Ah, Rose! Welcome b-"
Klaus was cut off by my grabbing his throat and shoving him against the back of his chair. I held it at such an angle that if I simply moved my hand down one inch, he would have a broken neck. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't annihilate you right this very second," I said.
"Because, at this very moment, that position is reserved for Elijah," Rebekah sighed, taking a sip of her coffee.
I narrowed my eyes at Klaus, who was smirking, even with the position he was in. "Be happy that she's right." I let go of him, pulling up a chair and sitting beside him.
Rebekah didn't say anything, and Klaus seemed to suspect her reasoning. "Let me give a voice to that look in your eyes: my saintly noble brother lies writhing in agony in the bayou, victim of my bastard brother's bite, when just one or two drops of his blood would ease his pain."
"On the contrary Nik, I am simply enjoying my brekky, waiting for Elijah's healthy return," she said, giving him a fake smile.
"Oh, come on Rebekah. You've been giving me the devil's eye all morning, out with it."
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Maybe she's just a little worried that if she voices her most likely very strongly-worded opinion, she will end up on the wrong side of those little Hybrid teeth of yours," I said.
Klaus hit his fist against the table. "Poppycock. I would never bite you," Klaus said, pouring me a glass of orange juice and handing it to me. "As Roseia knows, Elijah made some very offensive accusations about my intentions towards my child, he deserves a day or two of discomfort!"
I rolled my eyes, taking a long drink of the juice that Klaus had poured for me. If only it was vodka, then it might actually have helped me get through the day.
"Besides, you know my preferred method of punishment for your indiscretions is the dagger."
Rebekah smiled, then stood up and glared down at Klaus. "There is something fundamentally wrong with you."
Klaus' expression stayed stone cold until she left, then he turned to me. "Well, she obviously will be avoiding me today. What are your plans?"
I sighed. "What do you think? I'm gonna go help Elijah."
He sighed softly, leaning against the table and putting his hand under his chin. "I don't think you are."
"You can't stop me."
"On the contrary, I can," he glanced over at the orange juice, and I began to realize exactly what had happened when I started to feel slightly drowsy.
"You son of a bitch," I growled, the words beginning to sound slurred.
"I would advise you to not let me pour your drinks, Rose," he smirked, right as my eyes closed and I fell limp against his shoulder for the second time in 24 hours.
*
When I woke up, it was almost noon. Turns out that whatever sleeping potion or powder, or whatever the hell Klaus wants to call it, wasn't very effective for a hybrid. Idiot.
I got to the little house that the two had been staying in within minutes, and I panted a little before hitting my knuckles against the door. "Hayley," I called out.
She quickly opened the door, and I glanced at her curiously. I didn't need to be invited in, apparently. I walked into the house, going over to a very sweaty and unstable-looking Elijah. He was breathing heavily. I'm glad that I got here when I did... Otherwise he might have done something to Hayley that I know he would later regret.
"Hayley, I need you to leave," I told her. "This could get ugly."
"He might hurt you," she replied, shaking her head. She knew exactly what he was like at this very moment. She also knew how weak I still was.
"You have to. Go back to the house, and stay away from Klaus. Wait for Elijah to come back, he should be fine pretty soon after this."
"This? What's 'this'?"
She soon figured out what I was doing when I removed my jacket and pulled up one sleeve of my shirt.
"No! He could kill you!" She argued.
I smiled softly. "Hayley, I can't be killed. The worst he can do is knock me out for a couple minutes if he takes too much blood. It's you that he could really hurt."
She bit her lip. She still wasn't sure.
"If you're not worried about yourself, then worry about that baby girl inside you."
She stayed still for a second, then nodded slowly. "I'll meet you outside."
I nodded to her. If she wasn't going to go back to the house, then waiting outside for Elijah was her best option. After I helped Elijah, I needed to find Klaus. I had a bad feeling. I felt like he was going to be in trouble, judging from Rebekah's reaction to what he had done to Elijah.
She went outside, and I continued to do what I was prepared to.
Elijah began to whisper mumbles of something was difficult to understand with my dulled senses. I put my hand on his head in order to adjust his position, when I was suddenly brought into whatever memory he was now consumed in.
"Leave it alone, Niklaus," Elijah said.
Elijah was standing on the staircase of our old home. It was the one in Mystic Falls, and it was the night that we had had a party. It was also the night that Finn and Esther planned to kill Elijah, Kol, Klaus, and Rebekah.
"Come now, brother. I mean, I certainly don't blame you. She really is a perfect choice," Klaus grinned, squeezing Elijah's shoulders and nearly spilling his drink.
"We are nothing but friends, Niklaus," Elijah said decisively, looking over the railing of the staircase at the people in the room.
Klaus chuckled, "Alright, fine then. Just remember, unlike you and Rose, the rest of us are not blind."
Klaus walked up the stairs, and I saw Elijah look in the direction of the corner of the room. I followed his line of sight to see... Well, me.
I had been standing in the corner of the room, speaking to Stefan and Damon Salvatore. When I saw Elijah's eyes on me, I grinned and raised my glass to him, and he gave me a soft smile before doing the same.
I came out of the memory, my eyes wide. Had they been talking about me?
Well, even if they were, it didn't matter. Elijah confirmed that he didn't think of me in the way that Klaus thought he did. So it was all okay.
I pushed the thoughts of that short memory out of my mind and adjusted Elijah's body so that his head was against my stomach. I pulled up my sleeve a little more, then put it to Elijah's lips. His mouth slowly opened, his subconscious aware of what I was trying to do.
His teeth sank into my wrist, and I bit my lip. He drank eagerly, knowing that it was helping him. I could feel myself start to weak, and when I knew that he had had more than enough of my blood, I pulled my wrist away from his lips.
"You're gonna be okay, Elijah," I said. "That is my promise to you," I told him, remembering the night that he killed Agnes. His promise that she would never touch me again.
His breathing became much more steady, and I slowly moved his head off of my lap. I got up and walked over to the door, sending him one more glance over my shoulder to make sure he was getting out of the fever. He had stopped sweating almost as soon as he got my blood, which was a great sign.
"Hayley!" I called out, and saw her at the campfire with another woman.
I stared at her in confusion, then I saw her back. She had her back facing me, and on her shoulder, I saw the birthmark that she had tried to cut off. She was a member of Hayley's family. Hayley would be safe with her.
"I'm going to go find Nik, and see how much pain I can inflict on him before I start to get tired," I smirked. "I'll see you two later."
Hayley nodded, and I turned to leave, when she called my name again.
"Rose! Wait, I need to tell you something," she said, jogging up to me.
"What? Is something wrong?" I asked, glancing warily over at the woman she had been talking to, who was now watching me curiously.
She shook her head. "No, it's just..."
"What?"
"When Elijah was doing that whole vision thing, he was talking about Celeste for a minute... But then he started talking about you," she said. "He said that he was going to murder Klaus for almost killing you like he did with Celeste."
I nodded. "Well, we're close. He's my closest friend aside from Niklaus."
"Yeah, but... Are you sure that he sees you as his friend?" she asked.
I stayed quiet, not knowing what to tell her. So, I just nodded. "Yes, I'm sure. I'll see you later, Hayley."
I turned to leave, glancing back at the woman at the camp fire before continuing to walk.
As I did, my mind continued to linger on the memory that Elijah had been having. Perhaps we really are more than friends.
