As I walked away from everyone towards my room knowing that Alec was watching me go
As I turned around I saw Alec at that moment and his eyes were watching me so I didn't say anything but just walked away, I knew that now either Izzy or Alec would stop me and try to talk to me after the news. Because we were together this time and they faced those guys with me.
And I didn't want that conversation right now as I hadn't properly been able to handle it. I walked to my room closed the door and just left the bag down as I took a deep breath and started to let the feeling sink in.
It was not good to see Emily like this, I was devastated to see my sister like this being captured by someone and that I cannot do anything to help her. It made me feel so helpless and useless.
I slowly lost my courage to stand and sat down crying bringing my knees to myself thinking about how I couldn't save her.
I could see her in front of me but I couldn't do anything to the guys, as they have her. I was feeling so useless that I was being made to do something like this.
I cried for quite some time and then remembered that I had said to those guys that'll go and made up my mind that I'll save Emily from them even if I risked my life. I got up and picked up the bag and started to unpack it and got my clothes out and kept them on the side, then the other small bag. Then the photo-frames and then my laptop and chargers and stuff.
I kept everything out and closed the bag and kept it aside and picked up my clothes and started arranging them in the cupboard and
after a few minutes, I heard a knock on my door and as I turned I saw Jace standing there.
"Hey Veronica," he said
"Hi, Jace, what happened? You here. Everything okay." I asked him as I kept the clothes back
"I could ask you the same" Jace said
"Well, you haven't talked to anyone much after you came back, you've been keeping to yourself this whole time even when we told you that you're not allowed to go outside on your own. You just agreed to it and didn't answer back like you usually do. What's wrong?." He asked me standing there
"It's nothing Jace, I'm okay. I was just tired from all the training. It was my first day so I got exhausted so I wasn't in a state to talk much." I replied trying to avoid the confrontation as much as I can right now
"If this was the reason then" he came in and sat on the bed in front of me "where did you get this bag from and all these clothes and stuff." He asked
I kept quiet for a moment looking at him without saying anything and then let out a sigh and sat down to face him
Even though Jace has been good to me since we met there is something different about him, the way he takes care of you, when you need him and shows up whenever you need someone without even asking is special. And maybe that is why I like him because not everyone is as considerate as him. I know he and Clary are close and stuff but still, Jace is nice and friendly. Someone who you could rely on without a doubt and would love to have as a part of your life.
"I went back to my home. To get some things from there and also to look for Emily if I could. I met Alec and Izzy there when I reached my house." I explained
"I know Alec got a call from Magnus when we were out, he got to know that you're going to your house while we were on a mission. So he insisted on going as I finished the mission and came back to the institute." He said
"You guys knew that I was out somewhere else?" I gave him a shocked response upon knowing how they get to know where I was.
("Magnus... how could you tell them where I was going, now because of that Alec and Izzy got in trouble for me and Alec. He got hurt because of me. I'll not spare you the next time I see you!!" ) I thought
I then continued to tell him what happened. "They have her now, and want me to come to them when they'll send a signal or else they'll," I said as
"I can understand how It would feel to see something like this. It's okay I'm here, we're here for you. We'll get her out without hurting anyone. I promise to you, Veronica." He said as he kept comforting me while I cried a little resting my head on his shoulder
"We need to tell others about this too." He said as we parted away
"Jace No, not now. I don't want people to know about this. I'll handle this on my own." I said wiping away my tears as he handed me his handkerchief. I smiled at him and cleaned my face.
"But then we won't be able to help you. You're one of us now and you're problems are also ours. We'll help you just like we help Clary." He said
"I understand your feelings Jace but I don't want to be a burden on you, after all, Clary has problems that are bigger than mine. She's the one who needs help and support now. Don't worry as I'll handle this myself and leave you guys and the institute as soon as I get her back I'll return to my normal life. You won't have to handle me" I said
"Hey, don't your problems be no less than anyone else's, your problems are also connected with Clary's? You both are facing the same things but in different ways. And I'll help you out as much as I can. I won't let you face all of this alone" He promised me.
"thank you, Jace, I'll let everyone know when I think it's time. People here already don't see me in a good way. So right now I wanna keep things to myself as much I can."
He nodded "I understand but don't think much. People will soon get used to you being here and will welcome you just like the rest of us did." Patting my arm he said
"Well now that you told me everything, I think you should also tell Clary about this. She was quite worried for you. After listening to you, I get why Alec was behaving differently and kept fazing out in the meeting." He explained
"Alec? He was distracted but why?." I asked him
"Well, you need to figure that out on your own. I figured it, it's your turn now" he gave me a wink as I let out a chuckle and hit his arm while he laughed and smiled and hugged me back "we'll bring your sister back. Don't worry" he said as I nodded.
As he left the room I thought about what he said about Alec, and remembered his wound and quickly picked up my first-aid kit and rushed out
I searched for almost every area then I remembered a place and rushed there. I opened the door and walked in "There you are. I knew you would be here." I said catching a breath as I saw him standing there looking over Ruby.
He looked over to me and our eyes met as I walked up to him, his gaze lingering on me making me feel butterflies in my stomach. It seemed he had a lot of questions in his eyes that he wanted to ask me.
"What're you doing here? how did you know that I would be here? Jace told you? " He asked
"I looked everywhere and then this place came to my mind and I thought you would be here. Guess I was right, And no Jace didn't tell me anything." I said as I saw that he was standing near Ruby trying to make him come over to him.
"Ruby," I smiled and called him as he flew over and sat on my palm I extended my hand towards him as he watched me with a smile creeping on his face as I saw him from the corner of my eyes.
"Here, now you can pet him." Ruby was chirping as he looked over at me
"You wanted to pet him right? that is why you were looking at him," I pointed out, he slowly brought his hand forward and started stroking Ruby as he chirped
"See he likes you too, just needed a new way to be approached," I said as I saw Alec smiling while he was stroking Ruby and looked at him as my eyes diverted over to his wound
Ruby flew away as I walked a little closer to see his wound, as we looked at each other
"The answer to your question of why I'm here is that" I pointed over to the wound on his neck as he touched it, he hissed and saw blood.
"Sit, please. I'm sure in all the running around you forgot you had an injury." I motioned him
"Izzy can heal this, you don't need to worry about it. Besides, it shouldn't be a concern for you. You have bigger problems right now" He exclaimed
"I guess I answered your question when I said I'm here to treat you" pointing out the wound again as he didn't take the answer of course. "I know Emily's life is in danger because of me and also my own life is in danger from those guys but" I opened the first aid kit and took out the medicines. I looked at him and saw him staring at me still standing there.
I grabbed his arm and pulled him with me and made him sit there quietly without making eye contact
"But what? And I told you Izzy can do it, Then Why are you being so stubborn about this small wound?" He shouted as he stood up I turned around as he shouted at me while closing the distance between us. He was towering over me. I pulled him and made him sit down
"Because I don't like when people get hurt because of me" I exclaimed looking at him
"Sorry I shouldn't have done that." He said with his hand folded on his lap
I turned back and grabbed cotton and dipped it in the water bowl and held it in my arms
"Look upwards and open a button in your shirt so that the collar doesn't stick with the wound while I clean," I said as I tore another cotton bud and placed it near the antiseptic and the water bowl.
I turned to look at him and found him looking at me while I still had the cotton in my hand waiting for him to follow my orders. I raised my eyebrows, folded my hands and started opening his button as I looked away
"Done," he said. I looked back and saw him looking up at the ceiling.
"Thank you, this might sting a little," I said as I cleaned the area near the wound as he hissed.
"Why didn't you say anything back then when Lydia and Jace told you not to step out of the institute without letting someone know? You usually answer back every time we say something" He asked
I went to the table and got another cotton and went to him as he looked at me waiting for an answer "I didn't want them to know, what I had gone through. That is why I stayed quiet"
I replied while he said "I know how you might be feeling. Isabelle's my sister. And if something like this happens to her, I would also be feeling like you are right now" he said
The wound was cleaned, "Well then that sums up the answer to your question. And thank you for understanding and not saying anything to anyone in the lobby at the time," I said and looked at him and saw him staring at the cotton.
"It won't hurt much as I have cleaned it, you'll just feel a little burning sensation that's it, " I said and walked to him as he nodded and looked upwards without saying anything.
I dabbed the antiseptic on the wound as he hissed a little and grabbed my fingertips which were on his shoulder. I looked down to meet his gaze as our fingers brushed against each other.
"It's done, it won't hurt now. Just one last thing left to do" I said walking back to the table and getting the medicinal cream.
"Why are you worried about me and my wound though, you don't even like me?" He stated
"It's true I don't like you because you never apologized for hurting me and never treated me nicely... But-" I pointed out as he looked up I applied the cream as my fingers touched his bare skin and my eyes slowly looked down at the exposed area from where his buttons were opened.
He became a little stiff as I snapped myself out of it and applied the cream "you helped me, yesterday, and saved my life. Even when you also didn't like me back. You looked over me when I passed out and even came to check on me at night. So. I guess I owe you for whatever you have done till now."
"And because even if I don't want anything to do with you or your family, you still went out of your way to protect me from those guys. When there was no need to. And I don't like when people get hurt because of me, close ones or not. I don't care, I just hate seeing people risk their lives when I'm around. And you, well You" he cut me mid-sentence.
I looked up and saw him already staring while I noticed we had gotten to each other, our faces were merely close enough
"You, risked your life for me even when you didn't know me. When you didn't know if I would ever be a part of all this or not, still you did it. That means a lot to me. Thank you, Alec"
"I didn't do it for you. I did it for myself and the Institute, besides you were hurt so you couldn't fight on your own," he said as we held our gazes and I heard Izzy from behind.
"I think the work's done you don't need me," she said clearing her throat as We both turned to face her
I looked back at him and he did too. We both stepped back looking away I saw Izzy standing in the hallway with Jace and both of them gave us a look. I went back and started arranging the things and then quickly put everything away in the box as they both walked over.
"I didn't know you two would be here, and you would treat his injury." She said giving me a smirk
"You guys have risked your lives for me twice, the least I could do in return was to help you guys out," I replied
"You didn't do anything. You just wanted to save your sister, at least now we know where she is." Izzy said hugging me as I smiled
"Thanks, Izzy," I said and smiled
She went to check on Alec's wound. "Well, it looks like you do know something about medicine. Just keep this up. And you'll heal by tomorrow." Izzy said looking over at him
"And just see you don't touch it or get it wet, it will get infected," I said and started closing the box.
