Duality: Beast or Butterfly

There is such a duality within me lately
The happy go lucky
The optimistic slightly naïve
A child’s first remembered Christmas
Sneaking down stairs to a world of tinsel
Kaleidoscopic Christmas tree in red and green
Everyday is full of opportunity
Emerald grass shimmers in the dew
Orb of orange and yellow warmth of a lover
But the night is coming
Full of dread and loathing
The shadows whisper
Unseen things with smokey tendrils
Groping grasping with icy intent
I feel like a man torn in two
A cocoon entombing an undecided being
Each day I feel the razors
Slicing from inside
So close to the surface
But daylight  is on the horizon
Sherbet bursts behind outlined pine
The thawing begins again
I feel the razors recead
Scars are the trail to whence they came
The light chasing shadows within
Like the sun hitting the east side of a tree
The surface in warmth grows no moss
But it is there
Just hidden on the side beyond observing eyes.
