I sank into the water feeling numb, detached. I knew I wasn't in control last night, but what about this morning? Was that the stone, or me - was I that disgusting? And what of my bonds. If Phineas was right, I had sentenced them to either death or eternal servitude to Erebus.
I sat staring at the water before me when something shiny caught my eye. A razor. Reggie had been wise enough to remove anything dangerous from my room, but this was Phineas's room. No one predicted I would end up here.
I held the blade in my fingers, testing the sharpness as I let the hot water soften my wrists. I only had one chance at this. If I die before Erebus seals the bond, then the boys will be saved. Yes, my death will cause them pain, but it would be far less than the alternatives. I had to do this. It was the only choice.
I winced as the blade slid down my forearm, then the other. I lowered my arms into the tub, letting the water speed the process. I tried to focus on their faces in my mind as silent tears fell down my cheeks until the darkness took over.
