I don't belong in the League, you know that." I whispered back.
"I know. But it doesn't have to be the League. We can go anywhere. If giving up the League, giving up that ideology is what it takes for us to be together I'll do it in a heartbeat! Please Kimi. I love you and we can ran away together. Anywhere. We can go to ... Iceland! You always wanted to go there right? We could see the northern lights, live in a cabin somewhere. We can leave all this behind. Just you and me. Have the future we always dreamed of!" He reasoned, his voice coming out hushed but fast, as though he could see the future he had just painted before his very eyes and it would disappear once his words stopped.
"Touya ..."
Kimi's POV
"I know it's crazy doll but we can start again! I don't regret walking away from my father but walking away from you was the biggest mistake of my life. I love you doll and I'd give anything to be with you again."
"I can't. I just ... you once meant everything to me Touya and I will always care for you. But I love Keigo. When you left you took a part of me that I never thought I'd get back. But ... I did. I grew more in those years without you than I think I ever have and finding Keigo only helped me more. What I share with Keigo is different than what we once had but it doesn't make it any weaker. I'm sorry Touya, I can't walk away from my life, even for you." I finish, tears welling in my eyes at my own worlds. Touya walked away from me to live a life on the run, I'm not about to do the same thing to Keigo.
"So the bird's name is Keigo huh? I still think he suits 'stupid chicken' more ... please don't cry doll. Look obviously I want you to come away with me but if he makes you happy, then that's good enough for me. I suppose I always knew it was a long shot, and definitely a selfish request on my end but if I didn't ask then I knew I'd always regret it."
"What will you do now? You don't have to go back to the League you know. You can still have a fresh start?" I ask hopefully.
"I've lived as a villian for so long but ... maybe you're right. I'll think about it doll. And don't worry I won't be a stranger if you don't want me to be." He said passing me a scrap of paper with messy numbers written across it. My heart swelled at his words.
"If you can't read it don't worry, that chicken has it saved anyway. But ... I don't think we'll be seeing each other anymore, I don't think I can take that." He smiled sadly pulling me into another tight hug. I inhaled deeply, his smokey scent mixed with the leather of his jacket leaving me slightly intoxicated.
"I love you doll." He murmured, his cold lips once again pressing against the crown of my head.
"I know. I'll always love you too." I breathe squeezing him tighter in my arms as though this is the last time he will be here.
*** The following day ***
The early sun cast a lazy yellow glow over the white hospital room yet it came as no surprise, I had been awake for hours. I had watched the dark world fade and beams of orange and red danced through the little window, I had overseen the shadows of my bedside table stretch across the room as the sun rose, and on any other day I would have marveled at the sight. But instead my eyes were red and painful, puffy from the long gone tears that had dried upon my cheek as Touya left for who knows how long. It was selfish of me to grieve, stupid even, he had left me before and yet this time it seemed far more final than it ever had. Sure I had a means of contacting him, but what's to say he won't reply? What's to say this wasn't the last time I would ever see Touya Todoroki alive again?
"Good morning songbird I come baring breakfast, I got those little pastries from that bakery you like!" Keigo cheered as he walked into the room, smiling widely with a brown paper bag in his hand, the smell of which made my mouth water involuntarily.
"W-what's wrong? Are you hurt?" He asked frantically seeing the faint memory of the tears I had shed last night.
"I'm fine I just want to go home." I said, my throat still sounding raw from the night of crying.
"Well it is your last day here but ... something tells me that isn't all. What's happened Babybird?" He asked me lightly sitting down at my side, his wings coming to wrap around me in comfort.
"Touya came here last night. He explained everything but ... something tells me we won't be seeing him for a long time. I know it's stupid for me to get emotional over something like this and it's definitely not fair on you, but I can't help it. I'm sorry Keigo." I explain softly feeling him cup my face with one hand and guide it up to look at him.
I was expecting some form of resentment or anger at the least but his golden eyes held nothing but compassion.
"Hey now you don't have to be sorry baby! I'm not entirely blameless in this whole thing. Dabi helped me save you so I can't exactly be mad at him. But I didn't tell you he was involved. I guess I was a little jealous, you guys have history and I didn't want to stress you out even more especially after everything you went through with Overhaul ... but I should have told you and I'm sorry about that. I suppose he isn't that bad of a guy, I mean he has excellent taste in women!" He joked making me snort at his attempt to lighten the mood.
"I love you." I reply naturally, leaning my head on his shoulder and feeling his wings puff up like they always do when we cuddle.
"I love you too ... but if you don't eat those pastries they are gonna get cold." He replied kissing my forehead and using one of his feathers to guide the delicious smelling paper bag towards us.
"This is why your a top hero, you know your priorities!" I laugh beginning to munch on the pain au chocolat and moaning at the sensation of warm chocolate mixed with buttery flaky pastry.
We had spent the morning indulging ourselves on pastries and eventually left the hospital altogether, flying back to our comfy home in a peaceful haze.
"So I actually may have a little surprise waiting for you Babybird." He grinned holding open the door and shuffling in behind me. Something about his words seemed to make him nervous and it made me cast my eyes over to him once again. His confident demeanour from earlier had faded slightly, the fingers of his left hand tapping faintly on his thigh as he eyed the room around us.
"Should I be scared or did you just order excessive amounts of fried chicken again?" I asked my eyes narrowing playfully.
"That was one .. okay two times! But no, no need to be scared, for you at least!" He replied with a nervous laugh.
"Is everything okay Keigo?" I asked slightly worried for him, he seems to be pretty red, he isn't sick right?
"Yeah yeah just close your eyes!" He smiled back with a quick nod. I gave him a raised eyebrow before complying laughing slightly as I hear him shuffle further into the room and trip over something on his way.
"You okay there?" I snort hearing him mumble to himself.
"Yeah! Okay I need you to give me your hands ... the over way." He demanded clearly amused as I turned my hands so that my palms faced the ceiling.
"And ... open!" He cheered as he placed a slightly rounder Peanut in my hands.
"Hi, welcome to Chili's!" Peanut screeched happily, nuzzling his beak against my thumb.
"Owww hi baby? How's my favourite little birdy?" I coo'd in a baby voice bringing him up to my face to cuddle him against my cheek. My mom and Keigo had definitely been over feeding him, though he doesn't seem to mind, I thought tickling his plush green body
"I thought I was your favourite little birdy..." Keigo mumbled as I turned to peck his cheek lightly.
"You're my favourite big birdy" I laugh shaking my head as he blushes at the word 'big'.
"Well I mean I do recall you saying something about that in the be-"
"Nope, not in front of the baby!" I scolded hugging Peanut closer to my chest until I felt something smooth rub against my hand. Looking down there was a thin strip of purple ribbon attached to his ankle, which I held up into the light to examine closer.
As my eyes skimmed across it, I felt my breath catch, there in elegant golden stitches read the words 'will you marry me?'
I gazed up from the ribbon as Peanut began to shake free from my grasp and fly back to his hammock having gotten annoyed at me holding his leg steady. Keigo now knelt down on one knee, red small velvet box in hand containing a shining silver engagement ring. I felt my mouth open and close multiple times like a goldfish as I stared down at Keigo.
"I know this probably isn't the ideal time to do this but I was sort of planning it before the whole Overhaul situation happened. And I know this might be a little overwhelming when you just got home but ... Babybird I love you! I'm not the best person in the world. I can be clingy and loud and I don't know much about the books you read but you mean everything to me. When I first met you I thought you were just another citizen I could walk home in the dark, just someone else that I'd see once and that'd be it ... but when you smacked me with that bag baby ... I knew you were the one for me!" He said taking my hands and making me laugh at the memory, tears welling in my eyes against my control.
"I told you that hawks mate for life and I know that's true because I know I could travel the world and never meet anyone as right for me as you Babybird. You always say how I've helped you but you don't even realise how much you have helped me. You've given me a home, a family a future when at times I didn't think I deserved one. You mean the world to me baby and so I just had to ask ... Kimiko Kita will you marry me?" He asked, his normally confidence soaked voice shaking with undeniable nerves.
"Are you kidding me?! Of course I'll marry you! Yes!" I cried throwing myself at him and wrapping my arms around him in a tight hug.
"Haha I think I'm supposed to put the ring on you before you pounce!" He chuckled sitting up as I still straddled his lap, his wings spread wide and more puffed out than I had ever seen them.
"O-okay!" I manage to mumble, tears still gliding down my cheeks with no sign of stopping.
"I was hoping you'd be happy when I asked you but you look like I've just said I ate Peanut!" He chuckled wiping away some of my tears with his thumb.
"That was just so b-beautiful! Why you gotta go and get me all emotional?" I laughed face planting his shoulder as one of his palms comes up to rub my back.
"I haven't seen you like this since we watched that video about the corgie puppies! Now in the immortal words of Beyonce, let me put a ring on it!" He laughed loudly as I pulled back and held out my still shaking hand.
Keigo, now seeming back to his confident self after my answer, smoothly slid the silver ring onto my finger, the amethyst gem in the centre catching the evening sun and seeming to glow a vibrant purple. The ring wasn't a typical engagement ring, it had a similar cut, a plain thin silver band, but instead of the traditional diamond it had a teardrop shaped amethyst centre surrounded by a circle of red garnett.
"We aren't the most conventional family so I thought 'why stick to tradition', right? The purple reminded me of your eyes and the red is like my wings so it's sort of like I'll always protect you, I'll always be around you like the garnett around the amethyst ... not in a creepy yandere way I swear!" He joked holding my hand before bringing it up to his lips and placing a feather light kiss against the ring which sat just above the promise ring he had already given me.
"I love it! And I love you even if that did sound a tiny but creepy!" I smirked wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him in for a much needed kiss.
*** Timeskip ***
I made it back earlier than I normally would, the traffic leading away from UA nearly nonexistent as my bike flew past the side streets to the cozy cottage I call home. It was unusually sunny, even for September, the sun still cast a rosy glow on the porch making it seem all the more peaceful.
"I'm home!" I call out, taking my shoes off at the door and laughing wildly as a flurry of feathers swarm around me tickling my neck and sides.
"Hey Babybird, you're back early!" Keigo greeted me with a playful smile, using his feathers to pick me up and move me towards him.
"And these are for you!" He grinned holding up a small bouquet of purple and white fox glove.
"They're beautiful but what's this for?" I asked with a smile taking the flowers and breathing in the sweet scent they emitted.
"Can't a funny bird man buy flowers for his beautiful wife?" He replied, his hands coming up to rest on my hips and swaying us back and forth, an action I had gotten very familiar with over that passed five years.
"Mmmhmm how was work?" I asked placing the flowers down and bring my hands up to wrap them around his broad shoulders.
"Same old same old. I smiled, saved the day, annoyed Endevour. How about you?" He grinned.
"There's a batch of new first years with healing quirks so I'm giving them remedial classes and they're really coming along!" I replied thinking back to the eager first years who had been following me around the infirmary like lost puppies all day.
"Aww UA are getting mini Kimis that's too cute!" He replied playfully.
"Speaking of mini Kimis ..." I began before the door flew open revealing what can only be described as a miniature Keigo. My son Kaito grinned widely, his small red wings stretching out around his four year old frame, whilst a disheveled Shoto trailed behind him.
"Mommy! Daddy! Peanut we're home!" He bellowed out loudly, his red wings knocking over various books and pens sitting on the side table as he tried to take off his shoes, eventually getting help from a flustered Shoto.
"Hey buddy, how was your day with uncle Shoto?" Keigo asked kneeling down as Kaito ran into his arms climbing onto his knee. It was a strange sight, and one I never thought I'd get used to. Keigo and Kaito were completely identical in everyday. The same messy blonde hair, the same markings around their eyes, the same scarlett wings. A part of me was annoyed that he had none of my characteristics but I wouldn't change him for the world.
"I got my quirk daddy I got my quirk and it's like mommy's!" Kaito shouted happily as he looked up at me, making grabbing motions with his hands for me to pick him up.
"No way, Kaito that's amazing! My baby boy is growing up!" I fake cried watching him giggle gleefully, as he pressed his face into my neck, his tiny arms and wings wrapping around me instinctively.
"That's amazing! We gotta see it buddy!" Keigo said in the same excited tone, bringing his hand up to mess up Kaito's hair.
"Okay!" Kaito replied loudly looking off towards his Endeavor plushie which rested sat on the couch. I had at first been reluctant to get him the toy but it seems he's taken on a similar hero preference to Keigo, and Shoto seemed to be on a better standing with his father, though I still don't like the man.
"No wait-" Shoto began but before he could finish one of Kaito's feathers shot out towards the toy turning a vibrant purple and evaporated into the air leaving behind a glittering forcefield around the plushie.
"Wow" both Keigo and I murmer watching the forcefield shimmering over the toy with no sign of releasing.
"You won't be able to touch that doll for the next couple of hours. He shot a feather at my phone and I couldn't get to it for about two hours, I would have called you as soon as it happened otherwise." Shoto explained putting down Kaito's Endevour backpack as both Keigo and I starred at the forcefield bubble.
"Pretty cool right? Now I can be a hero like daddy!" Kaito cheered smiling at his forcefield proudly.
"You bet you can and your power is even cooler than mine because it's like your mom's!" Keigo coo'd ticking Kaito's sides and causing him to squirm happily in my arms.
"Well I better head back now." Shoto said with a small smile on his face as his godson ran up to hug him once more.
"Are you sure you can't stay for dinner?" I asked glancing back at the still trapped Endevour plushie.
"Yeah, I have a date planned with Izuku." He replied ruffling Kaito's hair affectionately.
"What do you say to uncle Shoto for looking after you today?" Keigo asked as he sent out a few feathers to poke at Kaito's forcefield.
"Thank you uncle Shoto! I love you!" Kaito recited as he always did when saying goodbye to Shoto.
"You too Kai. Have a nice evening you two." He smiled giving us both loose hugs before leaving for the night.
"Want to see me do it again?!" Kaito smiled widely.
"Definitely but first you have to get changed and cleaned up for dinner. It was daddy's turn to cook so you know what that means!" I say watching his eyes widen excitedly.
"KFC!" Kaito shouted before running off towards his room to change into his house clothes.
"One day I'd like to see you actually cook something" I smirked watching Keigo rub his neck awkwardly.
"I mean I tried on our first anniversary but you know how that went down" he chuckled. Making me shake my head at the memory.
"I loved those curtains." I mused, remembering the kitchen curtains that Keigo had accidentally set on fire when trying to make homemade fried chicken.
"Sorry Babybird but if it makes you feel any better I also brought cheesecake for dessert?" He hummed tilting his head cutely.
"Oww all is forgiven!" I laughed running my hands up his toned chest until they rested around his neck.
"I was also thinking ... you know Kaito is almost five now and it might be nice for him to have a little brother or sister ..." he mumbled, a deep red blush painted across his cheeks.
"Oh really? I might be ahead of you on that one." I smirk watching him go from confused to ecstatic.
"Wait you're serious? Are you pregnant?! How far along are we?!" He asked excitedly bouncing on the spot whilst pulling back to grin at my stomach.
"About four weeks according to the pregnancy test but I'd like to take another one just to be sure!" I said with a grin running my hands through his messy hair and watching him glance up from my stomach to my eyes.
"I love you Kimiko Takami. I love you so much!" He cheered pulling me into a passionate kiss only to be interrupted by the gagging sounds of Kaito.
"Eww dad stop sucking mommy's face and get the chicken!" He demanded running up to us and hugging my leg tightly.
"You're right why should mommy get all the kisses? Come here you!" Keigo smirked chasing Kaito around the room to litter his face with kisses.
I placed a hand on my stomach with a smile and watched Keigo and our son running around the house like morons, Peanut screeching at them from his perch like the grumpy old man he is.
This. This is exactly where I'm meant to be.
