So instead, I counted. I put my head on the cold car window and counted to promise myself to stay composed in here. If I wasn't composed, I could quickly become a hash tag. Then, I prayed. I prayed like Ali taught me to. I needed to pray that this wouldn't be the end of my story.

Suddenly, the door unlocked and I was taken inside into a dark room. I had been here before. The metal chairs and the reflective table didnt scare me, but this time, I had a reason to want to get out and that was what scared me.

The officer that brought me here and a female one came in and sat across from me.

They looked like they were trying to intimidate me. I didn't know if they were weaponizing the pain of the niggas in my community or trying to make me feel small, but I didn't like either option. I was feeling vulnerable.

"Where were you the night of June 30th, Mr. King?" The lady leaned over the table.

"No lawyer, no answer." I shrugged.

I wasn't risking my life over a slip up. What I needed was Key's ma to hurry up with the lawyers from the law firm she worked at.

"Look, man. All we want is a simple answer. Why make this difficult?" The man spoke in a manipulative tone.

That's what made me upset. The lies and the deception coming out of his mouth were thrown things that triggered me with rage.

"I need to use the phone." Deep breath.

They both just looked at me.

"Answer a question and we'll let you." The woman sat back in the hard chair.

I couldn't get upset here. This wasn't the place. "Ma'am, I need to use the phone. I'll report both of y'all asses to the supervisor. Let me use it."

They looked at each other, reaching a silent agreement to bring me to the phone.

When we got there, they stood directly behind me. I didn't have any space, nor any privacy.

"Can you please back up?" I mugged them, and the officers listened.

I dialed in Ali's number, hoping that she would be waiting for me to call her. There was a ring, and another, and then another and, just when I was about to hang the fuck up, she answered.

"Leo? Is everything okay? What's going on?" Her voice came through the phone.

"These bitch ass niggas trying trick me and shit. Fuck niggas treating me like a fucking dog, man. If that lawyer don't come soon, I'm finna go off in this bitch, on dawgs." I whispered, but I was for sure that she could hear my heavy breathing and strained voice.

"Baby, don't get mad, ight? You can't get mad up there. Just remember that you're coming home soon, and this shit will be gone. Okay? So, think about something happy, 'cause getting upset will make things worse." The thought of being away from
her because of these charges was killing me.

"Ight. I'll try. I love you, Aliana."

"I love you, too." We hung up the call.

I showed the police that I was done and they grabbed my arm to take me back into that dull room. As soon as they opened the door, there was someone coming up behind us.

"Please, let go of my client. He can walk by himself." A black woman in a dark suit stopped them. "I'm Mr. King's lawyer, Mrs. Jean-Pierre. I'd like to have a word with him alone, please."

They stepped out of the way and let us into the room by ourselves.

"Okay! Nice to meet you. Let's just get down to business." I nodded my head in agreement. "I, honestly, think that the Terrell family will end up dropping the charges, because I have dealt with many many cases like this. But, for now, it is best that we establish your alibi and make sure that they know that we know that you are innocent until proven guilty. Key and Ali are your alibis, as well as Jay and Demon's. So, we'll answer a few questions and get you home!"

"Thank you. Preciate this."

The cops entered the room again and I had to force myself to follow my girl's directions. I tried to think about all the time I spent with her and everything I feel when I'm with her. I had to stay calm.

"Alright, bud." Yikes. "Are you ready to answer somethings now?" I nodded.

"Where were you the night of June 30th?"

"I was at home with my girlfriend and three of our friends." Short and simple.

"Okay, what did you do that night?"

Shit. "We watched movies, and played video games and stuff. Just hung out."

"Okay." Pictures slid across the table. "So, you don't know what happens with this?" It was Kiya tied up and beaten. I almost smiled at it.

"What is that?" I acted surprised. "Is that the girl y'all said that I did something so crazy to?" I examined the picture like I had never seen it before.

"Yes. You don't recognize these bruises?" I shook my head.

"Well-"

"Sir, if you don't have any evidence that puts my client at the scene and this is just an accusation with no proof, I think we are done here." I was tapped on my shoulder as a cue to leave.

"We will have another session like this, trust me." The cop said on our way out.

The lawyer led me to her car and I felt immediate relief. I was beyond thankful to Key and her mother for getting me this lawyer.

"It's best that I bring you to your girlfriends house because I don't want you and Jay together and for the police to see you guys conversing privately. That may seem suspicious. She knows you're coming, anyways."

"Okay, thanks."

We arrived at Ali's dorm room. I rushed up the stairs and down the halls. I didn't have the time to wait for the elevator. I needed to get into our house as fast as possible.
