When shutting off go to start menu click on it. You use direction left key the start menu looks highlighted and press enter
Options that appeared are to shutdown, restart computer and restart in MS dos
To switch off click shut down and it will it is safe to turn off.
Newer version shutdown and you just switch off the monitor.
Windows '95 was the earliest version that had Graphical User interface and had a word processor unit instead of just a line command the MS dos uses.
