Once distracted by Vishwamitra's severe penance, Indra sent Rambha to disturb Vishwamitra's penance, but the sage understood the conspiracy of Indra and cursed Rambha to remain a stone for a thousand years. The question arises that Indra committed the crime then why did Rambha get the punishment?
However according to a legend in Valmiki Ramayana, she was freed from the curse of a sage by a Brahmin. But according to Skanda Purana, its savior has been described as 'Shvetamuni', from whose left arrow it was freed by falling into Kanmitirth in Shilaroop.
