D A F F O D I L | NAMJEN

Start from the beginning

"why would your witchcraft academy press charges for a non-student? she's not qualified. she's completely human." han-gyeol pursed his lips.

jennie immediately pulled her hair away from her father and hastily stood up. her breathing was heavy and her eyes burned with rage and disappointment.

"my mother was a witch which makes me one too," she spoke with a small, quiet voice, "i'm going to mabeob."

her father sneered and was about to yank her arm when namjoon's hand came in contact with his skin. his eyes dark, threatening the older man that he would not hesitate to inflict pain onto him if he tried to harm jennie again.

han-gyeol slowly loosened his grip until his hand flung to his side. jennie glanced at the young man beside her before turning her back on her father. she was now determined to escape from the dystopia he had forced upon her.

namjoon quietly trailed behind her, his stance ready to lunge into combat in case han-gyeol decided to do something again.

"but jennie, you're my child! i'm human, which makes you one too!"

"you're wrong," jennie looked at him from the corner of her eye, "you're not human. you're a monster."

PRESENT DAY

"that's unfair." roseanne whined, placing her hand against her forehead as she gingerly plopped her body onto the couch.

"it's really not." taehyung rolled his eyes and sent a look of disdain hauteur towards her before looking down at his papers and continuing his school work. he couldn't fully wrap his head around the fact that this girl actually though that it was unfair he got a high score when he spent days studying because she received failing marks. it wasn't his fault she spent her time lazing around and frolicking.

roseanne sat up straight once more and stuck her tongue out at her senior. taehyung merely shook his head in disdain, this young lady truly lacked basic etiquette. when the the mahogany doors clicked open she grabbed the nearest book and started surveying with utmost attentiveness. at least, a little bit, she looked like she was actually comprehending the text. had the book been turned correctly, her act would have been a hundred percent fool proof.

"roseanne, your book is upside down," jennie sighed, "stop pretending. i know you're not studying."

"vice president!" the girl seated raised her voice uncharacteristically, her eyes folded into crescents while she forced a saccharine beam onto her lips.

"rosie, how many times do i have to tell you that you have study? do you not want to graduate?"

roseanne crossed her arms and returned to her normal pitch. "that's a bit of a stretch. i'm only in my first year!"

"it's okay to take a break, you know." namjoon entered the student council office. his uniform coat now folded and draped on his arm. like the hundreds of times he's greeted them before, a grin was on his face and his signature dimples were on full display. members of the student council couldn't help but be injected by the same amount of joviality he often had when in their presence.

"yes, that's right, president!" roseanne nodded her head while jennie sighed once more. the only time their treasurer wholeheartedly agrees with their president is when he talks about topics that stray away from his usual mini speeches about the importance of studying.

"we should have tea outside," he remarked as he pushed open the glass doors leading to a balcony attached to the student council office. a coffee table was placed in the middle of the space, along with four chairs perched around it. the picturesque sunset and the greenery courtesy of the school gardens set the perfect atmosphere for a mid-study break. "this is the only chance we'll get before winter break begins."

taehyung rushed out into the balcony, closing his eyes as he relished the cool breeze. roseanne followed after with the same amount of gusto and leaned against the balustrade, her eyes in awe at the beautiful scenery before her. jennie followed suit and with a wave of her wand along with a spell, plates of cakes and cookies filled the table, as well as cups of tea for each of them.

jennie picked one of the teacups up and treaded carefully to namjoon. she poked his shoulder before handing the cup to him.

"thank you, miss kim."

"thank you, president kim." she smiled genuinely, her heart pouring out with gratitude.

"for what?"

"for everything," she looked at him like he single-handedly made the stars and planets for her, "i know the government put you up to it, and i'm thankful that you did. thank you for helping me get the opportunity to grow. thank you for being my friend and thank you for getting me out of the hellhole my father put me through."

she wrapped her arms around his torso in an embrace. namjoon's heart raced as he felt her smile against his chest. he calmed himself down and placed the teacup onto the table before reciprocating her actions. when she wrapped them tighter around him, he did too.

"you'll always be welcome," he whispered into her ear, "thank you for sticking by me too. i'll always be your friend. nobody else makes a more iconic duo than the both of us."

jennie giggled and moved away from his arms. she tipped toed and kissed his cheek. "you're the best, joon."

his mouth turned agape and his eyes went wide as she walked away from him to join taehyung and roseanne as they ate the snacks to their heart's content. as jennie laughed and joked with them, joon couldn't help but smile in content.
