A pained shriek came from the maze.
Metallic vocal cords scraping against each other travelled through the air, consuming everything in range.
The gentle howl from the cold wind vanished from my ears. And all sounds from the leaves, dirt, and the other gladers ceased to exist, as if running away from the bone chilling scream. My eyes found themselves fixated on the open maze entrance, body stiff and unmoving. Frozen in place as my mind replayed the clanking of a grievers legs, the odor of its breath, and the cold dark eyes that had met mine in the longest second of my life...
They were coming
"Y/n!" Thomas yelled. He pulled my arm forcefully, almost making me trip. I turned, only to realised the others had already started running.
"They're..." I mumbled. My mind feeling hazy.
"We have to hide" Thomas repeated and dismissed my remark. Now taking hold of me even harder as he ran towards the forest, dragging me along.
Everything around us played in front of my eyes like a movie, like I was only observing and not indeed present. I could see Newt yelling something at us from the trees, but it sounded obscured to my ears.
I don't understand...
Air flew past us with immense speed, pushing my hair away from my face. The grass beneath us became streaks of green, though the walls to each of our sides seemed to be frozen in place, leaving me wondering if we were indeed moving at all.
Minho stood behind Newt, his eyes darting around. Gally was nowhere around them. I wanted to look back behind us but couldn't, since keeping up with Thomas took all my focus.
The sounds surrounding us got louder. My ears cottoned shut by the large blubber of indistinguishable noises. In the corner of my eye I could make out spears and rocks flying through the air.
This... this doesn't make sense...
Thomas released his grip as we reached the trees. My wrist dented by his fingers. The tall grass and straws pricked my elbows, and before I could turn to look back at the rest of the glade, Newt took his arms around my waist and dragged me to the ground.
"Quiet" He said in my ear. All of us crouched down in the grass.
The slight tremble in his voice grounded me. A clearness flew over my head and the glade around me came into focus...
What before had been nothing but mud in my ears, turned to shrieks coming from every corner of the glade. The sky had turned grey by smoke ascending from burning buildings, and names and calls for help were screamed by familiar voices, ripping my chest apart.
"No, Newt we!.." I exclaimed, trying to get on my feet. His arms tightened around me.
"We can't!"
The sounds continued. I looked between the grass to see nothing but moving shadows. With each second more gladers could be torn to pieces by however many grievers where out there.
I struggled against Newt once again but his grip didn't waver. Frantic for him to let me go, I turned around to look at him and raised my hand, intending to strike, scratch or push him away.
His eyes met mine. Cheeks stained with tears.
I froze. There was nothing I could do. There was nothing any of us could do as we sat and hid behind the grass and trees.
Next to us sat several others, their eyes filled with horror while staring at our home through the grass.
My arm fell down to my side, having lost the energy to drive it.
I closed my eyes, hoping to disappear. Trying to shut out the noise of dying gladers. The screams from my friends.
My family.
