I laid awake most of the night, listening to the gladers rolling around in their hammocks. After Teresa arrived, we agreed that she would sleep in my room, since I had no preference and it would give her some privacy. While I laid and rocked my hammock with one foot on the ground, several thoughts were occupying my mind.
The fact that in a few hours Mike would be out of the pit, Teresa arriving, and Thomas seeming bothered.
Also, the words Newt said to me lingered for longer than I wished.
"You have no way of understanding in any way what is happening" - It was like an echo in my head.
The words themselves were not particularly meaningful to me, but it was more the fact that he said them, and the way he said it.
This trail of thinking was starting to get too much for me. I got out of my hammock, making sure to be quiet. Knowing what it was like to arrive, I decided to check up on Teresa, assuming she most likely would be awake.
I stopped in front of the hut and knocked lightly on one of the walls.
"Teresa? Are you awake?" - I made sure to speak calmly.
A few moments went by without an answer.
"Yes, I am" - She answered with a low whisper. Slowly, I walked inside.
She was sitting on the grass floor. As I entered, she moved back, looking at me with relatively intimidating eyes.
I took a step forward and sat down across from her.
"Did you get some sleep?" - I asked her, trying to spark conversation.
"No, not really" - Her eyes switched between looking at me and the ground.
She seemed rather tense, which I understood.
Maybe if I tell her something about myself, she'll feel more comfortable... but, I don't actually know anything... so that won't work.
After a few seconds of silence, I got an idea of what to say.
"You know, when I arrived, I ran up a tree" - I leaned back on my hand in attempt to make the room feel less tense. Her eyes focused on me again.
"There were so many people who surrounded me that I just panicked. Newt had to come get me down later" - Her shoulders lowered slightly.
"I know this seems really scary, and overwhelming. But it should get better after a few days." - I leaned back forward, sitting upright again.
"Thomas said that no one remembers anything" - Her question was quiet but not timid or shy.
"No, none of us know anything, not even our age. We only remember our names" - Saying this reminded me that she didn't know my name.
"Mines y/n by the way" - I put my hand out for a handshake.
She shook it, and I gave her a smile.
"Now, it won't be long until morning so I'm gonna go." - I got up from the grass and walked towards the door.
"When everyone's awake, one of the guys is going to give you a tour and explain" - I said, before walking outside.
