As quietly as I could, I started making my way back to the hammocks, until I stopped halfway.
I know I won't be able to sleep anyway... like that's a new thing...
I decided to walk over to the closed maze entrance, like I'd done many times before.
The massive wall was cold to the touch as I ran my fingers across the stone while walking along side it.
When I had reached the closed entrance, I sat down on the ground facing it.
"So, I might be running tomorrow." - My voice was low in hopes of not gaining attention from any gladers that could be awake.
"I'm excited of course, but a part of me is also terrified..." - I began plucking grass from the ground as I talked.
"Knowing what's out there, in your maze... why isn't it stopping me from wanting to go? It's like I have some death wish." - I leaned back and fell down onto the grass.
After a while without memories, I slowly got to know myself. My weird quirks and habits. Like getting to know a stranger.
One of those habits was talking to myself, A lot. Or sometimes, even talking to the wall as well, as weird as that sounded.
"It's just that, every time I hear your doors open I long to go. Even after... last time." - I tried not to think of my night in the maze. Just picturing it made me feel uneasy.
"So, if I run tomorrow... I'll..." - "You'll what?" - My train of thought was interrupted by a familiar voice, and I turned around in surprise.
"Thomas, what are you doing here?" - I held my hand to my chest due to being startled.
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you" - He said, with a slight smile. We both let out a chuckle.
God please say he did not hear me talking to the wall... I bet he did. Oh no...
The thoughts of Thomas having heard me made me a little nervous.
"It's alright." - I laughed, my body calming back down again.
"What are you doing out here anyway?" - I continued.
"I noticed you weren't in your hammock, and figured you would be here." - He gestured to the wall as he spoke.
I couldn't help but to make a smug expression.
"hmm, you came looking for me you say?" - My voice sounding over suggestive in a comical way.
Thomas looked at the ground and laughed after hearing my goofy comment.
I patted the ground next to me telling him to come sit down.
"I went to see Teresa, and decided to go here instead of back to the hammocks." - I began explaining.
Thomas sat down next to me. His expression changed to a combination of confusion and wonder.
"Really? What did she say?" - He said, seeming interested. A part of me thought he was a little too curious.
"Oh, not much really. But I didn't expect her to, being new in the glade is scary. And being one of the only girls doesn't help either." - I paused and gestured to myself.
"I should know" - I snickered.
Thomas smiled, but didn't say anything more. I could sense me mentioning Teresa brought back whatever bothered him earlier today.
Ask him, now's the time... Or wait no, I don't want to pry. But I really want to know...
"Thomas?"
Oh god, now I regret it...
I turned slightly in order to face Thomas a little more.
"Yeah?" - His voice sounded kind. If anything was bothering him, It was hard to hear at this very moment. Yet I was sure something was wrong.
"When we found Teresa in the box, she said your name, right?" - I was a little hesitant. He looked away from me and turned his eyes forward, as I continued.
"And when she was throwing rocks, she allowed you to come talk to her. Do you have any idea why?"
Thomas let out a sigh.
"I've been thinking about it too. Trying to piece together how she knew my name, and the fact that some of our dreams may actually be memories." - He turned to face me.
"What if we've all met? Or knew each other before this?" - His expression came more to life.
His theory didn't seem unlikely to me. It would explain how Teresa knew his name, and why the other gladers appear in our dreams.
"Wow, no wonder you've been acting differently with all of this on your mind" - I reached out and squeezed his hand.
"Have I?" - His expression was surprised. I smiled.
"Well, not a lot. But I noticed something was off" - I let go of his hand and got up from the ground.
"We should go back to the others. If they find me out again, I swear they might start thinking I'm a griever" - I said jokingly. We both laughed and began walking back to the hammocks.
