"What's going on in there!" My older sister, Sam, ran into the room. "I heard a bunch of noise!" Then, she looked over and saw my machine.

"OMG! You got it working? Can I try it?"

"NO!" I told her. "I'm not sure if its safe yet. It might suck you into a black hole or something!"

"Oh please. You just want to go first. Do whatever you want, it's your machine I guess. I'm going to go and talk to Jaki. I'm trying to get her to help me hook up with her brother, Demi." she said.

"Cool name. I've always wanted to name my first kid that," I said thoughtfully. "And if it's a girl, I want to name her Vera."

"Wow...I'm so interested," Sam said sarcastically. "Anyways, I'll be in my room if you need me." As soon as she shut the door, my best friend Lexi ran in.

"I can't believe that you got it working!!! Have you tried it yet?"

"NO!" I said, annoyed. "Nobody can try it until I know for sure it's safe!" I must have surprised her a bit because she looked confused.

"Sorry, Sam just asked the same thing." I continued. Her face automatically smoothed out. She ran across my room, jumped on the bed, and started bouncing.

"How are you going test it without sending someone through?" She asked, obviously hoping that I would say I would send her through first.

"I...will try it." I said, immediately regretting my words. Did I seriously just say that I was going to risk my life for a machine?

"Great! But since you're saying it's sooo dangerous, open your presents first!" She said, at the same time that she fell off my bed. That didn't seem like her at all. Lexi was known all over school for being self obsessed and selfish. As if she had read my mind or something, she answered my question.

"The one that I got for you is un-refundable." Of coarse it was. Either way, I went downstairs and opened up my gifts. Everyone was asking about the time machine, so I went back upstairs once I had finished.

I looked for something to do, but the only thing I could think about was trying my machine. I decided to take a quick nap. When I woke up, I looked at the the clock. 9 PM! I had slept for 5 hours! So much for a quick nap.

I was getting up when something caught my eye. My time machine was still on. I was walking towards it when I tripped over a wire attached to it. While I was falling toward it, I noticed that it was sputtering. Off, on, off, on... I slammed my head against the side of the machine and blacked out.
