Ch 1: Once a Legend

And really everything was a downward spiral from there. She lost her job at Mercury labs. She'd been gone for too long. While Tina appreciated all the donations from Star labs she simply couldn't wait longer, her spot had to be filled and of course now they had no job openings. Tina was regretful but Clarity told her she understood. What did she expect? She'd been time traveling with the legends for like ever. Team Flash was crowded now, too crowded for Clarity's liking. With two speedsters, Cisco and Caitlin having powers, and now Nate joining the fold, why he couldn't try to strike out on his own like everyone else she couldn't fathom. Clarity just ended up feeling useless on the team. There weren't enough bad guys to go around. She was starting to see just how more advanced in their training her and Barry were than the others. Granted they'd had their powers the longest, but the difference was glaring. It just made her bored. Everything was too easy. Jitters still didn't name a drink after her. It made her wonder why she even bothered anymore. To make matters worse the ghost of Thawne always felt like he was there. Even though Clarity knew for sure this time she was just paranoid. Then she got a call from her dad. Her mother was taking a turn for the worse. She'd gotten an infection, the doctors wanted to run more tests but insurance was refusing to pay, her dad for the first time suggested taking her off life support. Let nature take its course. Clarity'd hung up on him. They weren't having that conversation. After the worst week ever Clarity was at a bar in star city. She'd gone to see Felicity but she didn't want to dump all her crap on her friend. So she bid her goodbye and found herself drinking alone at some shady bar in a bad spot instead.

"You Miss Springs are an extraordinarily hard woman to get a hold of." Rip slid into a seat beside her. He ordered himself a rum and coke. Probably one of the only things that was halfway decent in this dive.

"How'd you know I was here?" Clarity wondered playing with peanut shells on the bars surface.

"Gideon tracked your positrons. I've been trying to get a hold of you. You haven't been picking up." Rip leaned closer to her tapping a finger on her phone. "Do you even check your messages?"

"Not the ones from time masters who miraculously get their children back." Clarity replied sipping her drink. "Some friend you are. Did you forget about Elicia in those five years? Did you come here to gloat some more about it? Cause I really don't find it amusing. I'm happy for you, but it's just not fair."

"I know." Rip agreed with a curt nod. "I'm sorry the same couldn't have happened for your daughter. Look, I'm not just here as a friend, Clarity." Rip insisted. "I'm here to offer you a job."

"At your fancy bureau? I'll pass. I'm not that desperate to work with my ex boyfriend. Tyler Matrelli and I did not part on good terms." Clarity replied. "I'll find something else somewhere, somehow."

"With that giant gap in your resume?" Rip challenged.

"Whose fault is that gap exactly?" Clarity shot back. "Is this how you hire all your agents? Cause your a pretty piss poor recruiter."

Rip sighed. "Always so difficult with you. Clarity, listen being alone. Having nothing going on...you need something. Trust me, losing a child it...the pain never goes away. Even though I have Jonas back again feels like I'm going to blink and he'll be dead again. You need something to focus your mind on other than the grief or you're going to drown in it. I could get revenge on Savage that's how I kept my head above water. That was my focus but Thawne's gone. He doesn't exist. You have to do something else."

"My answers no Rip. I can find something else that isn't that." Clarity insisted.

"I suppose that's true. However, maybe this will change your mind?" Rip scribbled two very high numbers with lots of zeros on a napkin sliding it over to her.
