for those who aren't in the fandom and are unfamiliar with Tokyo Ghoul

set in Tokyo, the mid-2010s. Tokyo has been divided into Wards because of the rampant Ghoul plight. Each Ward portrays an area where there might be more of fewer Ghouls; for example, the First Ward is the safest for humans. The most dangerous Ward is the 24th Ward.
Our protagonists are in the 20th Ward, where it's more often than not, a safe place for humans, but is still declining in welfare.
The Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG), also known as "Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau", is a federal agency that serves as a criminal investigative body in Ghoul connected cases. Their officers are referred to as "Doves" and are on the clock 24/7. When the situation is dire, the CCG issues a curfew. They use nicknames to identify Ghouls and ranks
Ghouls attack and kill using their "Kagune (ka-GU-né)": their predatory organ, which can also be used as claws. Each Ghoul's Kagune is different. It is usually flexible and sturdy. They are creatures that are much stronger than human beings with incredible healing ability. If stabbed with a knife, the knife is bent, while the Ghoul's skin is intact.
The Aogiri Tree is a Ghoul terrorist organization led by the strongest Ghoul.

Japan 101

In Japan, it is the norm to bow in greeting and introduce oneself with their last name, then the first name. Using honorifics is based on hierarchy and formality, and the use of first names. Those who are close, or want to be close, address one another with their first names; sometimes with an honorific included. "Surname-san" is the most formal, titles aside, but can still be used among friends and colleagues. "Name-san" is somewhat less formal and is more commonly used. "Name-chan" is used for someone who is younger, but can also be used for someone who is a close friend. "Name-senpai" is used for someone who is in a higher rank, such as a junior student referring to a senior. "-Kouhai" is for a senior, referring to a junior.

Honorifics are simply a way of showing respect.
