She smiled thinly as she traced her fingers slowly over the wizened, weathered bark of an old oak, watching the thin flakes of bark flutter softly to the ground. Her long hair fell around her shoulders, a deep midnight blue against the edges of her view.

Her smile widened as she remembered the merry evenings spent in this garden, wine slopping down hands shaking with laughter.

Later, the starry sky shining down on them, a crystalline tapestry glimmering on the black, lapping waves of forgotten waters.

The soft way the breeze caught her hair but did not catch her as she tumbled into the black abyss below.

The smile slipped off her face.

She knew what she had to do, and she slid the scrolls onto her desk.

She was going to bring them back, and she didn't care what she had to do, who she had to murder to do it.

She smiled thinly.
