Chapter 7

I finally finished doing my hair and tied my white wrap dress, before putting on my short nude heels. I stood in the mirror for a moment, taking in my reflection. My lips were always more full than my sisters' but I envied her bright blue eyes. Mine were a darker brown. Our hair however, was almost identical. Hers was just a couple inches longer.

Grabbing my bag I scurried downstairs. "Happy birthday!" My dad hugged me before walking out to the car. "The reservation is 7:00 not 7:15." My mom hounded. The whole way to the restaurant I listened to my parents argue about being on time. I tuned them out as I looked out of the window. There was a stretch of woods that lined this road.

The golden rays of light from the afternoon sun, trickled through the trees and formed the perfect lighting under the trees. I loved writing about the outdoors, especially our forests. There's just something magical about it.

"We're here!" My mom shouted as she pulled up to Rafn's. It was a very nice place that my mom and dad have been wanting to try. What better time than my birthday.

"Happy birthday!" I heard everyone shout as we made our way inside. My eyes widened for a brief moment. I was under the impression that it would just be mom, dad, and I. I looked over the small restaurant and saw my sister, and Sam at the end of the table, next to my sister was Cassidy and across the table was Tony from work.

I took my time hugging each and every person before sitting next to Tony. "Hey iv'e missed you." I told him while throwing my cloth napkin over my lap. "I've missed you too, things have been boring without you." He said with a sorrowful smile.

"Yeah it was a surprise to me honestly. I think I'm going to email Cornell and see if he has any recommendations for similar jobs." I took a drink of my water and noticed Sam eavesdropping on mine and Tony's conversation. It had then dawned on me that Sam knew about Cornell and possibly why I was let go. My heart started racing when I once again recalled that night and my own eavesdropping.

"I think that's a good idea, maybe you should just come into the office? He's in town Monday!" Tony beamed at the idea of me visiting him in the office. "I think an email would be fine." Sam interrupted. The table went silent as I stared Sam down. I didn't know why he had such a problem with everything I did. He seemed to always be the one messing around in my business.

Instead of making a scene, I smiled a fake smile at Sam. "I think I'll go in actually." I said to Tony while still holding my gaze with Sam. His stare was almost just as menacing as mine. I broke my gaze as I heard my mom clear her throat.

"Well I'm starving, is everyone ready to order?" She perked up. I ordered the salmon and stayed pretty quiet the rest of the dinner. I tried brushing off my encounter with Sam.

"So Ell, what do you say to another night out on the town!" Cass spoke up in between bites of her steak. I couldn't help but laugh as I saw my dads expression change. "Absolutely not. Cassidy you should be lucky I'm not telling your parents." My Dad deadpanned while angrily cutting into his own steak. "Yes Cass, you should be lucky you weren't practically dragged out of there and snitched out by morning." I couldn't help but take a jab at Sam.

"Ellis you're too young for a place like that anyways. So many gross men could have taken advantage of you two." Rachel piped up.  Before I could respond Cassidy gasped. "You were dragged out?" She cut in.

"Yes, by Sam's friend Deacon." I responded, before my mother could stop the conversation.  Cass leaned into the table. "No! The cute one?" she blurted out as if we weren't at a table with my whole family. I felt my face heat up as Cass relaxed back into her chair, realizing that she basically told my family I've been fangirling over Deacon.
