Chapter 49: I'll Be With You Every Step Of The Way

Billy's P.O.V.

     I packed my stuff and was ready to leave.

     "Billy please, listen to me!", Alice told me once again.

     "Alice pleasee...", she cut me off.

     "I know she still cares about you and if you leave now without goodbye, it will crush her. She won't show it, but I know it will.", she said. "So please Billy, for the love of God go to that prom and say goodbye one last time."

     I'm not really good at goodbyes, but I don't wanna cause her any more than I already did. So I guess I'm going to that stupid prom.

Betty's P.O.V.

     The prom was great so far. I was dancing with my friends, Archie, Kevin, Jughead, Reggie and Veronica. We were all making memories and having so much fun. Veronica had such a cute pink-gold dress, I loved it.

     I saw Steve too somewhere in the crowd, we just smiled at each other, and that was it. He came with Liz i think.

     Suddenly slow song started, Photograph by Ed Sheeran and Archie took my hand and we started dancing. Few seconds later, he moved his eyes from my eyes to someone behind me.

     "Arch, what is it?", I asked turning around and saw Billy.

     "You don't mind if i take your dance partner, do you Andrews?", he said coming closer to us.

     "Actually he does!", I said.

     "No, it's okay Betty.", he said going away.

     "Why you always have to be such a dick?"

     "May I have this dance?", he simply ignored my question.

     I took his hand, he smirked and then spin me slowly.

     "I'm leaving Riverdale tonight, Betty.", he said all of a sudden and I looked at him confused. "I would invite you to come with me to LA, but we both know you won't accept my offer. Plus you're going to NY.", he said. "Maybe one day when you finish Yale, you'll come and let me show you City of Angels."

     I tried so hard not to cry and I succeeded. "That's never gonna happen. After college I'm coming here, cause my life is here, in Riverdale."

     "This small town won't ever be enough for you, Betty. Goodbye.", he said leaving me alone on the dance floor.

     One tear fell down my cheek, i wiped it and went after him outside.

     He was just about to get in his car when I yelled. "Why’d you do it?", he stopped and I was so afraid of his response.

     "I don’t know.", he shrugged, not turning around. "I don’t know why I do anything anymore."

     "Right.", I sneered. "I handed my heart to you for a hundredth time and it was torn to pieces and you can’t even give me a stupid explanation to why the hell you decided to fuck my cousin in the fucking bathroom on our fucking date?!", I screamed at him.

     "I don’t know, okay?!", he said forcibly, finally turning around to face me. "I don’t know. I guess it’s because I was afraid you were going to leave me eventually and hurt me, everyone does. And I loved you, I mean I love you. But that doesn’t matter because you still would’ve left me one day because of someone else and I couldn’t handle that. I hurt you because it’s easier to destroy something you love than it is to watch it leave."

     "Do you regret it?", I asked quietly, even if we were a bit far from each other he could still hear it.

     "What?"

     "I don’t know.", my voice shook. "Everything."

     He was quiet for a moment. I opened my mouth to tell him to forget I asked, but finally he said. "Just because we didn’t work out doesn’t mean you weren’t the best thing that ever happened to me. Because you were, Cooper."

     "Yeah.", I said with glistening eyes from tears. "You too, Hargrove."

Steve's P.O.V.

     I saw Betty running after Billy, and I was wondering what he did this time. I was also wondering if she tries to find me in him. Has she ever regret for choosing him, and not me?

     "Hey, youuuu...", Liz bumped into me, she was obviously so drunk.

     "Hey, easyyy...", I held her.

     "Dance with me, Harrington.", she said dragging me on the dance floor.

     "I think you're a little bit of too drunk for that."

     "Booo, you're no fun!", she wined.

     We danced a bit, but that wasn't dancing it was more like spinning in circle. She looked really pretty tonight. The black dress was perfect fit to her body. Her makeup was good too, nothing dark, but more natural. And her lips...

     "Why don't you just kiss me already, Harrington?", she said smiling.

     "And why don't we get you home, huh? I think that's better idea."

     "Come on, I know you want to. Kiss me!", she continued to try and kiss me.

     I somehow manage to get her out and put her in my car. I drove Liz to her house and put her in her bed. Just when I was about to leave she spoke quietly. "Can you stay the night, please? I don't want to be alone tonight.", I just nodded and got under the blanket next to her.

     She came closer and put her head on my chest. I didn't know what to do, or how to act but she just said. "Just hold me, you dummy.", as if she read my mind.

Betty's P.O.V.

     "So he's leaving, huh?", Archie asked me and I just nodded.

     It was 5am, the sun was coming up, and Archie and I were at the Pop's. I was crying my eyes out and Archie was of course here with me, listening.

     "I just think I can't do this anymore, Arch.", I said to him. "I'm just waiting for Billy to come through that door and tell me that this was just one of his cruel jokes. But he won't. He won't ever come back, he's leaving for good this time.", tears came down my cheeks. "And as much as I hate him, I still don't want him gone. I don't want him out of my life. I don't know how am I supposed to keep going."

     "Day by day, Betty. You'll get through this. And I'll be with you every step of the way, okay?", he put his hand on mine.

     I nodded, wiped my tears and put my other hand on his.
