Part 36: Your Face In A Locket

Start from the beginning

“It’s hard not to!” Kimberly said with a sly smile. “We feel terrible. You guys were perfect for each other.” She said clumsily. Her words caused a dull ache in my heart and I longed for Taylor’s embrace. I wanted her to tell me that it would be okay, that it would get better, but I knew that wasn’t going to happen.

“Let’s unpack your things,” Kariann suggested, rising off the mattress and unzipping one of my suitcases. “It might help take your mind off things.” She shrugged her shoulders innocently and I couldn’t help but nod my head in agreement. Then, Kimberly and Kristin stood up to open the rest of my luggage too.

Before I got the chance to join them, my mom rested her hands on my cheeks, and looked into my eyes.

“Karlie, please try to forget her,” She asked quietly. “I know that you loved her, but you don’t need someone like that in your life. Take as much time as you need here, we’re in no rush to kick you out.” My mom let out a soft laugh and I couldn’t help but match it.

“Thanks mom,” I said, reaching in for a hug.

“Hey? What’s this Karlie?” Kariann asked, snapping me out of my daze. I turned my attention to her and saw that she was holding up a small tiffany blue box, with a white bow tied around it. My heart stopped when I remembered what I had bought, and I immediately regretted ever purchasing it in the first place.

“It’s nothing, just put it back.” I ordered stiffly. Kariann raised her eyebrow at me, but held onto the box.

“This is Tiffany & Co. Karlie, it’s not ‘nothing’.” She mocked, shaking her head dramatically.

“Did you buy that for her? Please don’t tell me that you did.” Kimberly groaned.

“It’s not what you think,” I snapped. “I bought it after the shoot had wrapped early yesterday, thinking that it would be a beautiful six-month anniversary gift when the time came.” I said quickly. Looking at the box made me want to be sick. I was so excited to give it to her less than twenty-four hours ago, and now I wouldn’t care if it got tossed out.

“Why don’t you just return it?” Kristin asked suddenly.

“I can’t, I got it engraved.” I explained quietly. I started to fidget my fingers together. I wanted the jewelry out of my sight.

“Can we see it?” Kariann and Kimberly asked curiously, already untying the bow.

“No! Just get rid of it, please?” I begged.

“Come on Karlie, just let us look at it. We’ll only look for a second.” They pleaded.

“Fine, but don’t read the card on the inside.” I groaned as I rolled my eyes.

When they lifted the lid off the box, I could already see the sparkle off of the diamonds. I had bought Taylor a white gold necklace, with the pendant two sideways hearts shaped like an infinity sign. On the front of the pendant were ten small princess-cut diamonds. On the back of it, I had asked the jeweler to engrave ‘To forever’ in flowing cursive. The phrase brought me back to the night before Taylor left to finish the Red Tour. Her voice saying those two simple words floated through my mind, and I reminisced the two of us lying in her bed, toasting with champagne.

“Karlie, this is beautiful,” Kimberly gushed, her hand over her mouth. “How much did this cost you?”

“Too much, now that I think of it.” I said lowly, blinking to fight back the stinging sensation of oncoming tears.

“What are you going to do with it now?” My mom asked earnestly.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. I didn’t want to keep it, but I knew I would probably end up stuffing it in my closet somewhere only to be rediscovered years later. “I wish I could return it, it would make things so much easier.” I said. Everyone in my room nodded their heads in agreement. The silence settled quickly, but it broke as Kariann let out a gasp.

“I have an idea!” She said excitedly, waving her hands up and down. I gave her a bewildered look, but I was intrigued about what she had to say.

“What?” I questioned.

“You can send it to her. It’ll let her know what she’s missing. You can write her a note that says something like, ‘I bought you this as an early gift for our six-month anniversary, and I don’t have any use for it now.’ That’ll really dig at her.” She suggested. I was surprised by her idea; Hurting Taylor wasn’t something that I wanted to do, but it would at least get the necklace out of my hands. Maybe every time Taylor looked at it, she would be reminded of what she had given up that night.

“I don’t know, that seems pretty harsh…” My voice trailed off as I continued to think on the idea.

“No Karlie, what she did to you awful. I think she can handle it. Besides, you won’t have to look at it anymore, and you can focus on getting over her.” Kristin reasoned.

“I guess you have a point,” I agreed. “Let’s do it.”
