"You have a–" Everyone around us was visibly startled.

"Is that a problem?" The Duke's cold, calculating gaze swept over the small crowd.

My heart still felt stuck in my chest.

"N-no it isn't, excuse me." The man turned on his heel, disappearing into the hall.

Good riddance.

"Follow me." The Duke glanced down at me before making his way out of the door.

What just happened?

I stood rooted to the floor. The murmurs of the small crowd around me pounded in my ears.

"Fiancé?" The Duke let out a short laugh as soon as we were out of earshot of the party.

"I'm so sorry Duke Ackerman," I averted my eyes, focusing on the floor.

"Look up." He reached out a gloved hand, pushing my face up.

"I'm sorry."

What is he doing?

"You've got guts for an inbred brat, I'll give you that."

"I didn't mean for you to get involved," I glanced away again.

I was just trying to enjoy the cheese plate in peace

"You were planning on posing as my fiancé? For how long? Did you really think that I wouldn't find out?" He scoffed. "What a shitty plan."

"No!" I burst out, "I mean I was just trying to avoid that man–"

"That Count?"

"Right, I'm sorry sir, he was getting too close so I made up a lie to avoid it." I bowed my head.

Duke Ackerman frowned, a strange look falling onto his face.

I think I'm going to die.

"And you are?" he asked, leaning forward. I took a step back.

"The 13th princess, Y/N L/N."

No one you would know.

"Sir! The prince is asking for you!" A guard rushed in, disrupting the moment.

Right, I had heard that Duke Ackerman and the prince were fairly close.

"What a brat," the duke spat out, glancing back my way. "Next time you plan to start trouble in my name, tell me first." He spun around on his heel walking away.

He's not going to kill me???

The guard nodded at me before running off to follow the Duke.

I should get back before I really do get killed.

What did he mean by 'telling him first'? Is he inviting me to visit him?

My 18th birthday is in four weeks. I'll be as good as dead after that anyway.

His dark hair, those eyes that glittered under the candlelight, even his skin looked perfect and unblemished.
